The Fan Has Done It !

Look out Loretta, The Fan is now TIED with WVAQ 12+ in Pittsburgh!

So happy that with the Pens series, the never ending Steelers drama, the high intensity debate of who the Pirates breakout star will be this year - this station manages to crank out a 1.3 rating.

With its legendary all star hosts - why can't CBS work out a deal to simulcast this baby on XM/Sirius? C'mon its the pride of Pittsburgh!
No reason why we can't spread this quality product coast to coast!

And, look at how well ALL CBS Pittsburgh properties are doing! That hot rockin' flame throwin' Star 100.7 sure is sounding GREAT too! What's that ? I think I just heard some hot new breakout hit from the Black Eyed Peas mixed in with some Matchbox 20. That's just genius!

Keep it up CBS Pittsburgh! You're sounding great!

Actually the increase they showed represents a pretty decent month. If they keep trending like this they could pass 1250 by year's end.

The wild card in the equation is Madden's numbers. Does the Super Genius hold his audience now that hockey is done, or do they go looking elsewhere for Steelers talk (which will be kicking into gear soon...)?

Soon??? Does it ever stop?

And that's with everybody in Duquesne Heights, Mt. Washington, Green Tree and the Greater West End
able to pick them up on their toasters.

::) The Fan was a dumb move from the start. CHR is red hot across the country and "96.1 Kiss" is proving that as well. CBS would have been much better off to keep CHR on 93.7. The numbers were better, and it's cheaper to run. Or even put the 90s/Gen X. type format that they do on HD2 ("93.7 The Blast") on the main signal. Or how about a rhythmic CHR for the market. Any would be better options than the current sports format.

The reason for sports was so that they would have male 18-34 and 25-54 demos to sell.

CHR gets 18-34 females, and they had a lot of overlap with Star. Y108 also has a lot of female listeners and KD's audience is old.

None of your suggestions would have fixed that in any way.

Facts and logic don't work for scorned B94 fans. There aren't many of them, but they're vocal.

And for some reason, the few FANS of the FAN are very vocal too.

All I know is that sports media people and front office people, both in the pros and in college, listen to The Fan ... and, from what I hear personally, alot of actual "fans" as well. I don't quite get the ratings numbers so far, but I have a feeling the format is going to sell. In fact, I think it already is.

They are gambling everything on their ability to win one of the local PBP contracts when it comes up.
If they strike out in that effort this is going to look like one of the all-time dumb decisions indeed.

Were all these "fans" unaware that we had 2 1/2 sports stations in town already. I don't think so. I think it is a relatively small audience to start. I know that listeners feel that everyone must listen to their favorite station, but we know thats far from true. I don't care how many "front office people, or insiders" listen...ok...thats 3000...on a good day...if they each buy a car every 2 months from a Fan client, or put in a new back yard from Lowes, than yes...it will stick around...don't see that happening. Sorry, there just aren't enough people who care.

All I know is, from listening to The Fan at odd hours of the day and night,
they sure seem to call! ;D

The problem isn't listeners, though stations would always like more, they are already CUME-ing better than the other sports stations, now it is simply a matter of increasing the TSLs. Ideally they would do that by building a destination show, that is a show that people can't miss, not unlike a Madden or Stan and Guy, but that process takes time and effort. I am not sure if any of the current shows will reach that plateau, and as long as the station's advertising is generic in that it doesn't promote the stations personalities it isn't helping them in that regard. It isn't enough to be live and local all the time if the average listener has no idea who the talent is or why they should care about the host's opinion.

Or if half the staff is obviously from New York...

A host's origin can be a detriment if the audience can't relate to them, but it isn't a killer. Stan Savran was from Cleveland, heck even Alan Cox, before he was let go in a cost cutting move by 105.9 was originally on the air in Chicago but they managed to find their niche in Pittsburgh quite nicely. If you are going to give me a Vinnie, who I actually like on the station, tell me why I should listen to him over a national host, otherwise I will tune in for the update at 20 minutes after, get my local sports scores and stories and move on.

Live and local will only get you so far, all of the sports shows in this market are live. The limited advertising they have done to this point makes it all about the audience, the fan as it were. That is nice for a small ego boost to the audience but it also diminishes your on air talent by saying none of the shows are really about them, that you could just plug any old Joe Schmo in and it wouldn't make a lick of difference. People tune in to Stan and Guy because they want what they perceive to be an educated sports opinion, Madden to see what off the wall thing he will say next, but why should I tune into, say, The ABC Show. What's the hook, besides that they will talk about local sports? Mike and Mike do okay in this market and they aren't talking solely about local sports, nor are they even taking calls for the most part, so why should I sit through The ABC Show versus Mike and Mike? Are they going to get better guests? If so then by all means say so. Vinnie and Cook did some really good radio, taking on the Pirates front office over the whole "destiny" talk, but unless you were tuned in that day you never knew it was going to happen. If that is what you are going to do, by all means promote that that is what you are going to be about rather than just hope the listening audience will stumble across it.

I think part of that stems from the fact they're still sorting out who's going to be part of the lineup going forward.

I believe they've gone into this with the idea of being able to hit the ground running in September. I think there will be some changes between now and then as they analyze ratings and the sound of the station.

I wonder if that means they are becoming interested in someone who they "weren't interested in" before....

From 6-6, the only show that really works for me is Vinnie and Cook. Can't take Alexander at all, I'll listen to ABC just to catch a 20 minute update and then tune out. Siebel is annoying and brings out the worst in Starkey. I enjoyed Starkey a lot better when he was solo.

If I could only add/drop 1 person, I'd can Alexander, move Seibel to the morning show and hire Ellis Cannon to work with Starkey. I think they would go well together.
