The Fan - PPM #'s

I guess they might get some potentail new listeners from people who did not even know they existed as a sports station, because they are connected with the Cowboys. But people are not rushing to the dial to listen to the station that carries the cowboys on a monday afternoon in May.

I wonder what kind of awesome buy-out clause Jerry has when this fails and he gets a huge payoff from CBS and then gets to go somewhere else when this station fails in the market and they dump their properties.

The Fan might make some inroads on mid-days simply because Michael Irvin is unlistenable. For those who don't want Norm and BAD radio, maybe Newie and Sean are a workable option. If the Fan can't make up ground on mid-days, they should just wave the white flag now.

I will admit that Ben and Skin are slightly better with Tim Cowlishaw these days. Still, their sports coverage lacks the humor and folksy feel of GAC and the wheels-off appeal of The Hardline. I can't see B,S,& T winning afternoon drive. I would tune in if they had the morning shift simply because Gordon Keith is a total beating.

All in all, I still don't think there is room for three sports stations in this market. Since the Ticket is still king and since ESPN will fight to stay in the market, the Fan is simply doomed.

I actually liked B&S when they filled in on the ticket. I enjoy their bits and their angle.. but for some reason they have not stuck with me.

I think I tried them the first week they were on 105.3 doing just talk and not only sports, and it was difficult for them and for me as a listener. Since then other than an occasional tune out from a commercial break I have not heard them since they became the FAN.

It is weird that I spend most of my time listening to sports talk radio but sports is probably the topic that least interests me. The night after a Mavs play off game or a monday after a Cowboys game? Sure I want sports talk and as much as people want to give.

People want to talk about the rangers on June 18th, or upcoming Cowboys training camp, no thanks not interested don't care. Nothing tilts me more than the Sports Radio networks that are so cliched. I find that listenable and I feel like if it were not or stations like the Ticket, ESPN would be more than happy to be run that kind of programming 24x7 and I think the Fan would as well.

I think the percentage of people who want to hear hardcore sports discussions all year long (lets talk raiders dbs in dallas in march!), is very small. My father is one of these people. I have never gotten him to listen to the the ticket, but he does listen to ESPN and perhaps the FAN I am not sure on that one. I just remember the days when there were no sports stations and you had Norm in the morning or all the evening shows. That was it. So people could handle those 2-3 hour doses of straight sports talk. When it became something to listen to 8-12 hours a day, most people balked at it.

I hope and pray that B&S are using some of the actual talent to be broader than just sports talk. However I think Gavin Spittle is such a maroon and jock sniffer that he is probably demanding they get x sports mentions in every segment.
