The Fan X 3

680 The Fan has flipped 1230-AM WFOM to be ESPN The Fan 2 with the complete ESPN Radio network feed, including Mike and Mike in the Morning. Gone is the CNN feed in the morning which will be missed.

1340-AM WALR has been recast as The Fan 3 with the Fox Sports radio feed.

So now we have The Fan, The Fan 2, The Fan 3, and their competitor The Zone.

The Atlanta sports talk cup runneth over.

Does any other city have 4 sports talkers?

And what is the strategy here? Couldn't The Fan be cannibalizing their own listeners and lose the head to head battle with the Zone?

Regarding the Fan 2 & # it reminds me of the question "If a tree falls in the woods and no one......

Good thought, but realistically 1230 and 1340 are never going to show up in the ratings given their respective signals. The Fan might as well use them to bolster its sales message by telling advertisers, especially those of the retail ilk, that they're now getting 3 sports stations for the price of one.

The Fan could also tell small retailers in Marietta and the downtown area that they can advertise on 1230 or 1340 for very little money. They could have done that before, but retail owners probably have instilled in their mind that WSB is the only talk station that people listen to. Sports is probably a better option.

I think it's the ability to bonus spots but its also a way to shut down 790's "live and local" boast. Cowherd, as awesome as he is, will not be on 680 by summer, I'm told. He and Rome will be on the rimshots.
