The Fan

I will never understand one's need to hear sports talk. This is a brilliant scheme for people to buy satellite radio. I'm now starving for a general, comedic talk show.

I'm not a fan of caller driven sports talk. However, there are enough people that want to hear their own voice that the Fan might actually have a shot. I did get a chuckle during the B&S/spares after them mix one night this week. The not-Pete guy says "I met a guy who told me he was on the air last week here, and it was the first time he has EVER gotten through on a sports talk station."

So basically Mr. not-Pete just confirmed they have no listeners. Nice.

That "Not Pete" guy is Mike Rodriguez, who calls himself M-Rod (Stupid) Dude is an idiot, worked here before as Mike Rogers, changed his name to help get a job easier and cover up his past failures...If I was Hispanic I would be P*$$ed off! Especially since he is so freaking bad!

Some simple observances from the cheap seats:

1. Russ is gone for caring more about the cheerleaders than the sports. I get that, but uh, Jagger?! Hello? No one can throw cash at Norm anymore?

2. Ben & Skin jumped ship at the right time. They were due, but to follow up with Pete Stein and that M-Rod tool. Geesh.

3. Who else from the Ticket has split to the Dark Side? And anything has to be better than the "not-so-local" morning show and two-hour afternoon drive show known as GAC that the national leader is throwing down these days.

Genius.

How about:

105.3 The Fan... When it hits us, it makes a splash.

It seems to me that the fan has more qualified sports flash anchors that could easily host shows then the actually show hosts. There's nothing wrong with Jimmy Christopher, Roger Embrick, and Chris Snyder. My biggest problem so far is with Mike Rogers/Hernandez/Rodriguez. He gives off that wink wink to the producer/board op vibe that I really don't know what i'm talking about but i'm fooling this joker on the phone. I hope that's not the case but at the very least he does sound like someone obsessed with his own voice. All in all though he's not terrible and i actually prefer him over just about anything at ESPN. I just feel that it's important to talk about what you know best and never ever fake it!!!!!

Many of the cats on The Fan seem to know what they are discussing, but a few of them (AKA M-Rod and that reject from the Desperados) just don't know enough. And I have a difficult time believing in this market, your best foot forward are them and ... I'm sorry ... Jagger?

I have a feeling they're letting chris jagger finish out his contract, then he'll be gone. They'll probably go after a local morning show, possibly norm or even a D&M is the cash is right?

Norm just signed a new contract and D&M have about 3 or 4 more years on their contracts.

They are lucky I still listen to Jagger well until they talk
to sports people then I turn it, and at 10 I turn it anyway..
I hate it and I am not happy about the change!!
I bet they lost alot of female listeners when they changed to sports..

Do keep in mind that this is the same bunch of geniuses who paid David Lee Roth $4 million for less than 4 months of work.

(not to mention lost advertising revenue)

Thing is, if I wanted to listen to sports talk...they wouldn't have had to change the format...I'd already have been listening to a sports talk station. Fortunately, I still get to hear Jagger and co. on my way in to work, but if they start talking sports, the CD player is fired up.

It's funny...one of their bumpers claims that the current 105.3 is "the sports station made just for you." But it's not. They destroyed the station that seemed made just for me, in favor of yet another boring sports station. Why is it assumed that, simply because I can urinate while standing, I care about sports at all?

I'm thinking Gavin woke up this past Thursday morning to find a lump of coal in his stocking.

Why do you former KLLI listeners dislike sports? I am curious. What about sports/talk do you not like?

I don't understand the Jagger morning show and sports the rest of the day. Like this post, it doesn't look like people that like that show care about the sports. The reverse also seems to be true. Since several ratings threads have indicated that the PM drive on KLLI was the only show that had any ratings and the rest were anemic, at best, what was the reasoning for keeping a low-rated, non-sports show on in morning drive on a new sports station? Do they need more time to find a sports AM show? Have Jagger's ratings perked up?

It's not that I/we dislike sports. Personally I am a huge sports fan, and I find myself listening to the current format more than I thought I would. My problem is not with the format itself, it's with the flop. There are a TON of sports radio stations around, but Live 105.3 was the only talk station that I was able to enjoy before the flip. I get my fill of sports from ESPN, the internet, and newspapers. I think most "former KLLI listeners" are just irritated that we lost one option of radio entertainment to yet ANOTHER sports station. I know a lot of people on here hated Russ Martin for whatever reason, but I enjoyed his show from his days at the Eagle and I really have nothing to listen to now.

Agreed. There is sports overkill in this market... Especially when the Stars, Mavs, Rangers and Cowboys all suck! The last thing I want to hear is a bunch of armchair quarterbacks weighing in on how best to fix what sucks. For that I came here and read about D/FW radio ;D

But aren't you the armchair quarterback of radio info? And while you sit there and tell us how it sucks to not have smooth jazz, you forget that radio is a business, and KTCK is one of the top 2 billing stations in the market. the reason that there's not smooth jazz overkill (much less smooth jazz at all) is that the suits don't think there's much of a market for it. Where they see that there IS a market for sports talk. Last I checked, both ESPN and KTCK were in the top 6 or so Men 25-54 and doing decent Persons 25-54. While Smooth Jazz couldn't break the top 20 P25-54.

If people didn't tune in, there wouldn't be 3 sports stations. Same with the hispanic stations. People can bitch on here about how there's too many 'spanish' stations, but if they didn't have listeners, odds are they'd change formats.

Just funny how it's only overkill when your it's not your favored format...

I think that's true to a certain degree but at what point is there over saturation in the market (I think there is a much better term for that)

Of course the ticket is has "high billing" as it was the only quality sports station in this market for a long time. Then came ESPN to try to compete but the ticket is firmly established. Adding "The Fan" is about the same as a third party running in an election with no real shot to win. Sure, some people will listen/vote for them but not enough to make a major impact on the station/campaign and in the mean time it has an adverse effect on the other two stations/parties. (convoluted enough fer yer?)

On top of that, is there REALLY enough "talent" in this market to carry THREE sports station through a broadcast day?? Let alone interest in sports (outside the cowboys)? Is there enough listeners (who buy products advertised on stations) to carry THREE stations with the cowboys season over? Can you spread coverage of the mavericks over 3 stations with any quality? The ticket has hockey pretty much covered in the mid day show as well as post game coverage.
Can the half dozen soccer fans drive a show on one, two or three stations?

Only so much peanut butter to spread around! And with three stations, the PB just got a little thinner on each slice.
