The Fan's problem...

is apparent.
Someone just sent me the latest Men 25-54 numbers.
M-Su 6a mid, they're up from a 2.0 to a 2.2. M-Fri 6a-Mid they're up from a 2.3 to a 2.5.

They're up. that's not a problem, right? Until you look a little closer. 6a-10a flat 2.2 to a 2.2...
3p-7p, down 2.0 to a 1.8.

So where are they up? Nights. They've gone from a 1.9 to a 2.8 to a 3.0 to a 4.2 in July.

Anybody want to bet that adding 1.2 to your 7-mid numbers is responsible for the .2 increase in 6a-Mid???

Which leads to the problem. Their talk shows are flat. Rangers are up. Rangers go away in a couple of months. Goodbye game cume, goodbye overall bump from 7p-mid ratings.

Their talk shows, the stuff that CBS has to go out and sell, just aren't that popular. Bruce Gilbert is certainly going to have his work cut out for him.

The story is CUME. FAN 450K, TICKET 301K ... just a matter of time before the sticky talent on TICKET move over to the big stick.

No, no, no, no, no!

The story is that even with a ratings bump caused by the best season in the history of Rangers baseball, the Fan STILL can't get close to the Ticket during drivetime.

Let's recap-

The Fan has:

1. Spent more money

2. Has a better frequency

3. Broadcasts the most popular NFL franchise in a market that is obsessed with football

4. Is broadcasting the Rangers during a feverish craze for the team

5. Has been at this for just about two years

6. Boasts several big name hosts who have been fixtures in DFW sports coverage for years including The Hammer.

And they aren't doing much better today than they were on day 1 save for during baseball broadcasts and syndicated overnight shows.

The Fan was stillborn. It is an abortion. Dead on arrival. Unless the new manager is radio Jesus, this thing ain't getting any better.

At agencies the story isn't cume, it's ratings. And with Men 25-54, (here's your answer Jeff) the Ticket is #1 or #2 everywhere except for nights.

The Fan is 21st 6a-Mid M-Su, 15th 6a-Mid M-F, 19th 6a-Mid, 18th in AM drive, 14th 10-Noon, 18th Noon-3, 27th PM drive and 4th 7p-Mid.

The talent isn't going to move over to the Fan until the billing is there to pay them. RIght now, CBS has to be losing money hand over fist- paying 8 or 9 on-air talent with ratings 21st in their target demo.

I've noticed they've quit begging for phone calls, fan text, and getting looser (edgier) with the content. Sounds better than it did before. Bruce already loosened up the saddle, you can hear it in the show already.

Barry Horn's column today in the DMN says Gilbert starts this coming Monday...so I don't if the changes are his.

According to the folks at Red Zebra, he's still there through the end of the month. At least that's what I was told last Thursday...

Unfortunately RP,

PPM doesn't care too much about the overall number of listeners... it is how long they stick around. The Fan has more listeners but they tune out rather quickly (can you blame them?). And also keep in mind these numbers are persons 6+... In men 25-54 there is no touching the ticket. And don't credit The Fan's "stellar programs" for the bump in listeners... more than likely it has more to do with the Rangers winning.

The Fan doesn't have a problem, latest Arbitron results show that they have more listeners than the ole sacred Ticket.
LOL. Today's trend has the Ticket #1 men 25-54 with a 6.0.

The Fan has 2.6, tied for 17th.

They've got a big problem. And anybody that doesn't understand the equation of ""Cume+TSL=ratings" is an idiot. As Jeff pointed out, they've got a problem in that their cume is bigger than the Ticket's, but they have lousy TSL. Therefore lousy ratings. that's a problem.

And Jeff is right. 7p-midnight the Fan is #2 this week w/m25-54... But baseball season ends soon. And they can kiss that cume and exposure goodbye.

Great point. Rangers are actually good this year and it doesn't appear that The Fan can make the most of it. I think if they took that stick back to Country, they would be better served. But, with Gilbert coming back, Purdy is clearly going to try and make another (failed) run at this. "The Fan's Problem"...they lack personality, they lack soul. The "little" Ticket has an old soul. They do more with less than any other station I can name. The Fan, by comparison, does less with far more. I have an idea, blow up The Fan and bring back Z-Rock. I would listen.

Z-Rock...all right!!!

What kind of fall bump will they get if the Rangers make the playoffs plus whatever the Cowboys will bring to the table.

Probaboy none and none.

The figures posted earlier in this thread show that they aren't converting massive surge in night ratings to any effect on overall weekly ratings. At this point, added Rangers listeners are most likely casual sports fans, so they probably won't be able to convert those to regular listeners.

And the Cowboys add nothing to a stations ratings. Look at historic ratings for KVIL, KLUV, KTCK...Their overall fall ratings don't get a bump from having the cowboys on.

that's hard to believe (Cowboys effect) I thought D Henry told me one time that a big Cowboys game last year added 250k cume to their week.
