The first winter trends are out- is KDKA back?

KDKA tied WDVE for the top spot. Why?

The sports stations were up- no doubt because of the Steelers. However, The X had only a minimal gain (possibly because we don't know if it's a sports or a music station anymore?).

Country isn't hot anymore. WDSY, which a few years ago tied for the top spot, is now fifth and doing worse than ever.

And if we add all the Frogs they are only 0.1 rating point back. What are they doing right and WDSY doing wrong?

AND PLEASE DON'T TELL ME IT'S THOSE HORRIBLE ALIASES THE DJs HAVE TO TAKE!

Which one is WBZW and which one is WZPT again? I forget.

Which one is WGSM, WKFB, WKPL, and WYFM?

Lynn Cullen will be going to a station that is currently enjoying a higher rating than WPTT ever did after Jerry Bowyer left.

If you combine the fact that KD is up, WSHH did not decline, and WJAS is up almost a point, it almost certainly means that there was an oversampling of old people. You can't look at individual stations in a vacuum when you try to analyze this stuff.

Country stations just don't have much good new product right now. Beyond Kenny Chesney and Carrie Underwood there's not much happening there now. The Frogs have Jimmy Roach, who's on Y108 in the morning?

Lynn Cullen is still going to the #20 station in the market and relying on word of mouth as a promotion budget.

Does KDKA still read long lists of school closings? That used to be their secret weapon in the winter. I remember one time they had a mediocre book and the PD was quoted in the newspaper as blaming it on a mild winter and no school closings.

Those were the days when it took over the morning KD Radio program. They had to do preschools by a number.

Add to that memory the Boron Temperature music/jingle. Life was so much simpler pre-internet.

The country "battle" is actually quite interesting if you're looking strictly at the 12+ numbers.

The format itself isn't exactly at it's highest peak right now, but if you look at the frogs numbers individually, there isn't a lot of change in them. They're pretty consistent. WDSY's numbers have been consistent too; they've consistently dropped.

So why is WDSY losing numbers and Froggy isn't?

One thing could be that CBS has really tightened their budget. WDSY hasn't done a couple of their "big promotions" over the last couple of years; the dollar bill game and the hot country jam. Also since the CBS FM's have gone up for sale, it looks like they're in a "hiring freeze" The night positions at WDSY and WZPT have been empty since their previous night hosts departed.

But WDSY's numbers have been dipping before that happened, so again, why are they losing numbers and Froggy isn't?

As far as music goes, both Froggy and WDSY basically play the same thing EXCEPT, Froggy will play and promote local "homegrown" artists starting with the now defunct Povertyneck Hillbillies.

The "Froggy" network is comprised with four small outlying stations which traditionally would give the hometown folks some airtime. WDSY "plays the hits" and only the hits. Perhaps hearing "the kids next door" on the radio keeps people listening to these small, local stations and thereby keeping the numbers consistent.

So is the support of local artists the thing that gives Froggy the leg up?

Forget 12+. Those are worthless numbers which is why Arbitron doesn't really care whose hands they land in.

The country market in Pittsburgh is somewhere around a 9-10 share total. When the format is hot that can rise to about a 12 or 13 but not much more. Right now country is in the dumper so the lower number is in play.

Y108 has the better signal, the tighter format and the better talent outside of morning drive. It also has the less annoying format (there are many who are outright offended by the Froggy approach, and not just in this market).

Froggy has the better morning show and all of the star power and market tradition that Jimmy Roach brings to the table. But depending on where you are in the market or where you are driving you have to make a conscious decision to go find the frequency.

The only reason they do as well as they do is that in a couple of the outlying areas they have always been the local station (103.5 and 94.9), and probably come in better than Y108 in those areas. The country listeners are largely outside Allegheny County anyway. Back when I was at WEEP in the 80's (then Y108's AM counterpart on 1080, with 50,000 watts daytime) most of our calls came from Uniontown, Butler and Westmoreland County.

WGSM...the old Z107.1 in Greensburg...now "Sam FM".

WKFB...AM 770, sister station of AM 620 WKHB.

WYFM...102.9 Youngstown.
