This morning at 9:00, Townsquare Media flipped Spanish Contemporary "Juan 94.7" KVLL to 80's based classic hits "Fun 94.7". This marks the return of the "Fun" branding to ETX, where it was once featured as a CHR on 102.3 (then KLJT) in Jacksonville. It also marks the return of English language programming to KVLL, which had been the only Spanish language offering by Townsquare in ETX.

Thank you! It would have drove me crazy the next time I pick it up wondering what station it is. Seems like something I’ll listen to a lot when I’m by Lufkin.

It is, but Super Mix is also very well established in the area. Rather hard to gain any real traction against what the Yates have built over there. Taking this station classic hits pairs up much better with the CHR and classic rock sisters, opening up better opportunities for local sales.

I think this will be a win for Luf-Nac. Classic hits was a hole in the area, and with its addition to the airwaves, makes me a little envious that they have Fun and Willy, but we don't.

nice, now if they could just change KLTD 101.7 to something better and maybe stick with it id be happy

Would you accompany me on a brief trip down memory lane, Dan?

February 2020: Townsquare flips "My 94.7" Lufkin to Regional Mexican "La Mejor 94.7".

May 2020: Townsquare flips classic rock "K-Rock 101.7" Temple to Regional Mexican "La Grande 101.7".

June 2022: Regional Mexican "La Grande" switches to Adult Hits "Juan 101.7".

July 2022: Regional Mexican "La Mejor" follows suit becoming "Juan 94.7".

January 2024: Spanish Adult Hits "Juan" flips to classic hits "Fun 94.7".

Given the track record of the two over the last couple of format changes, you may just get your wish.

I looked at the coverage map of KVLL. The tower is south of Diboll with the 60 dBu contour barely covering the community of license, Wells. The tower location surprised me considering it is licensed to Wells. I do remember going through there north on 59 years ago with KTBZ starting to cut out around Corrigan. KVLL was bleeding in really strong with “Na na na….na na na na…hey hey hey….goodbye!” like they were mocking me for losing my station. I was surprised that a Wells station would interfere that much because I thought the tower was farther away, but the tower was right there.

The signal looks to be OK in Lufkin, but not so good in Nacogdoches. That can’t help it be competitive. Hopefully, they will do better with this format since they are not in direct competition with another station.

KVLL-FM was originally licensed to Woodville (hence the calls), with its tower located in Rockland. Around 2002, Stephen Yates purchased it from Trinity Valley Broadcasting, when they cashed out by selling both the AM & FM in Woodville. It was licensed to Wells in the move, as Wells didn't have a licensed service assigned to the town. Diboll had 95.5, Burke 93.9/97.7, and Corrigan 99.3. By going with Wells, the move was basically rubber stamped, and Lufkin-Nacogdoches suddenly had a new station on the air.

As for the signal, it is obviously better to the south of Lufkin, but still usable up to Alto on 69, Livingston down 59, Appleby up 59. and its former Woodville home down 69. It's not the biggest facility in the Piney Woods, but does an adequate job of covering both Lufkin and Nacogdoches.

Your recollection is likely of KVLL-FM playing oldies during the Scott Shannon "True Oldies Channel". That's been awhile, given that 94.7 has probably had a half dozen formats since.

Very heavy on the 1980s, but that's exactly where I think "classic hits" should be centered in 2024.

On your trip up, I'd recommend a listen to 92.3 once you get near Marshall. I'm not sure what you think about a country/chicken rock format, but the presentation is really good for a small town station. The guys over there have really done a top notch job of restoring the FM back to relevance and a dedicated service to Harrison County.

Out in the Midland / Odessa area years ago there was a station that mixed rock and country for their programming. It was interesting.

That's always been something I thought could be a competitive format if done right. It never does seem to last long where it does pop up however.

The 94.7 in Austin also had a Country and Rock hybrid in its early years, late 1980s. Can’t remember if it was the original format, though…this was during its KAPT incarnation, IIRC. Didn’t last long.
