The future of 93.3 Huntsville

As we all already know, the "Journey" 80's and 90's formats that Cumulus rolled out have all failed in their other markets and have since flipped to something else, with Huntsville being the exception, although it also seems to be a failure here as well with ratings below even one whole share, yet Cumulus continues with the format anyway ::). Even their stab at all Christmas during the holidays to try to gain listeners was a bust. Surely this will not continue, and eventually a change will be made but then again this is Cumulus so who knows. I've said this before, and I continue to think this is the obvious best move to make. I think news/talk WVNN-FM should move to the larger 93.3 signal. Cox just made this move in Jacksonville with WOVK moving to a 100,000 watt monster signal and there has been much success with other stations in the country moving their news/talk simulcasts to larger FM signals. I think WVNN-FM with benefit greatly with a move to 93.3. With the recent sign on of sports on 97.7 The Zone competing with The Ump, WUMP could benefit from an FM signal boost as well with competition in town now. A move to 92.5 would help with that, making it WUMP-FM at 92.5 and 103.9. WUMP and WZNN simulcast Alabama football games already as it is, so hearing some sports on 92.5 isn't unfamiliar. I don't know if Cumulus is planning a change for 93.3 in the near future or not, but if they aren't they really should be. It sure is a waist of a good signal as it is now.

Any thoughts anyone?

I'd agree with moving WVNN to 93.3 and put WUMP on 92.5, the necessity to have Alabama football on 4 different frequencies (6 if you count the non cumulus stations running it (92.7 Arab, 93.9 Rogersville) because they're all rather puny is annoying (i'd say go back to the old days and put it back on ZYP). But who knows, Cumulus seems to have one station in a few markets where they just use it as a plaything and experiment, 93.3 has always been one of those, They'll try country again, then move on to something else.

LOL! You're probably right. Country again... for the fourth time. I wouldn't be surprised. If they really wanted to take a bite out of the Country demo, they should try classic country instead. Huntsville hasn't had a classic country station on a good signal before that I can remember, and there's obviously a decent market for it as 105.7 always makes top 10 in the market ratings, and that's impressive with their horrible rimshot signal. Maybe if they move WVNN to 93.3 they could try classic country on 92.5 instead, or if they are just so hell bent on leaving WVNN on 92.5, classic country would be a good move for 93.3 if they aren't comfortable with upgrading The Ump's FM coverage. Either way it would likely leave 105.7 obsolete in the Huntsville market (since they'd have a stronger station to listen to) as well as take a few listeners from WDRM. Who knows, maybe it would be enough to dethrone WDRM from #1? I still think what I originally said WVNN on 93.3 and WUMP on 92.5 would be the best choice but any of these cenarios would pull better numbers, bill more, and put solid formats on each of their frequencies. They wouldn't have to use 93.3 as a guinny pig changing it every year or so to something that's not going to work. That's why no one ever even bothers to listen to the new stations on that frequency because everyone knows its not going to last, so why waist your time getting to like it if its going to change eventually. The only way I see 93.3 having the best guarantee for success is if they put something already well established on it like WVNN.

I agree with you too about Alabama football on all those different frequencies. I remember when they used to play it on 93.3 back when it was country. I was surprised when they continued with it after flipping it to Urban as "Power 93.3". It was a good frequency to have it on, but now depending where in the county you are you have to change the channel to find it clear enough. It is very annoying.

I wouldn't say that people don't listen to it...you got one listener to "Journey" right here! ;)

As for 93.3, its hard telling what they'll do with it. Compete with WEUP again? That won't work. Country is overdone. Maybe something rock?

As far as I know it still is, but I haven't been up that way in a long time to see for myself. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I don't think anyone would ever be able to get any use out of it.

although it also seems to be a failure here as well with ratings below even one whole share

I would ask the questions, How is the billing? and what are the numbers in other demos?

With very little overhead. The revenue could justify the format.
