The Future Of KHTK Without The Sacramento Kings

Since KHTK is pretty much "Kings Radio", I wonder how KHTK will fare without them? Or will they still carry them after they move to Anaheim? I remember when the Oakland Raiders first moved to Los Angeles in the early 1980's, some Bay Area radio stations still carried them for awhile. Also when the Kings move, Will it help KCTC-ESPN 1320? Before the Kings moved to Sacramento, Sacramento was part of the Golden State Warriors broadcast territory (Channel 31 used to carry the Warriors for awhile before the Kings moved in). I wonder if the Warriors will try to regain the Sacramento area for its broadcasting territory? And if so, Would KHTK try to snag the rights of KCTC?

I presume Grant Napear would also go. So KHTK is left with Rise Guys, Geronimo, and network programming. The focus would likely go to Bay Area sports...maybe River Cats and Stockton Thunder?? KCTC would probably see little/no effect.

As far as I heard....KHTK will be relocating to Anaheim.
LOL! Actually this station originated in Stockton (1926) before relocating to Sacramento in 1962. That is still a good one Starbucks! Now where the heck is Jamba at when I am in the mood for a smoothie! ;D

1140 KTHK when in Stockton was actually the valley's first TOP 40 station under different calls beside KXOA. By the time they moved to Sacramento, that's when they went Country under different calls again. The point of this thread is.... everybody's leaving Sacramento as were becoming another Stockton.

When the Mayor of Sacramento, Kevin Johnson a Former NBA player, says it is almost done deal, plus the team has registered the names Los Angeles Royals, Anaheim Royals, The Anaheim Royals of Los Angeles, and many other variations to cover all bases. So every indication points of a move to Southern California after this season.

KHTK not only loses the Kings, they also lose their second most recognizable fixture... Grant. If you ask him what his profession is he'll tell you NBA play-by-play guy, not talk show host. He's gone with the Kings.

So the Kings are leaving because they can't have their new arena. Don't let the door hit you on the way out! And have fun trying to outdraw the Lakers! Sure thing there! Losers! As for KHTK time to move on!

Actually they signed on the air as KGDM in 1926. They were the local CBS affiliate for many years. In 1957, They changed their calls to KRAK and their format to Top 40 (also dropping their CBS affiliation). Around the same time, they upped their power to 50,000 watts. In 1962, They moved to Sacramento plus changed format to Country. They had the same calls (KRAK) when they were BOTH Top 40 & Country. In 1994, They dropped the KRAK calls and switched to a Sports & Talk format. I think they didn't get the Sacramento Kings until 1995 or so. I believe KFBK-1530 was the original radio flagship station.

The Maloofs are the worst. Most teams would love to have the support that Sacramento fans have given the team, but not the Maloofs want a newer arena. Not that Arco is that old. Many teams play in older arena's and they could build it with the cash they make off their Vegas properties, but they're greedy. They want the people to build it for them with public money. They will do well in Anaheim, but the SoCal fans shouldn't be too loyal as the Maloofs don't know what loyalty is and will probably burn them too. It's a blow to Sacramento's economy that will hurt almost as much as losing a team you've rooted for.

and Country due to too much competition.

For the record there are only two older arenas in the league (Oracle and MSG) and two opened the same year as Arco (Milwaukee and Detroit). Arco is a dump(by NBA standards) and I don't fault the Maloofs at all for trying to get a new stadium. The days of sports owners paying for things themselves are long gone unless their name is Jerry Jones.

To get this back on topic, why wouldn't KHTK keep the rights to the Kings? Sure plenty of fans will be upset and turned off to the team after the move, but there will still be a good number who will continue to follow the team as a casual fan, just as they always have. Happened when the Raiders went to LA (and came back North), happened when the Dodgers and Giants came out west and it will happen again here. Yes, KHTK will need to craft a new identity but I don't see any reason to stop carrying the Kings and related programming.

I'll give you one reason why to stop carrying the Kings and it' s the same reason I have yet to get behind the team... Grant Napear!

So far, just from the indications they've given on the air, KHTK will have the Raiders, Sharks and (just maybe) the Warriors next season. That should fill the sports hole on the station.
