The future of "The End"?

Chris_Rose said:
but regardless of what you may think of Mancow personally, none of his stunts ever resulted in death.

By nothing other than sheer, dumb, luck.

What might have happened when he shut down that bridge so many years ago? What if a heart attack victim had perished?

He was lucky. And calling out the industry for the behavior that he's based his entire career on now that his show is failing, smacks of self-serving opportunism.

Eric Muller has less than zero credibility on this issue.

If he's so enraged, have him give all the money back that he's made by exploitation of listeners and co-workers over the years. Then, I'll consider his motives to be pure.

The station should be taken off the air immediately. It should go completely DARK until the settlement with Jennifer Strange is worked out. (I too believe this will never see the inside of a courtroom.)

They should then sell the station for as much as they can get. Taking it DARK will at least begin to help it loose the awful stigma currently attached to it, thereby increasing it's stick value (which is currently very low).

In order for this frequency to survive, it needs completely new ownership and a completely new format. Nothing short of that will EVER remove the awful stank that currently permeates the halls of KDND.

There is NOTHING Entercom can do to save this signal. They need to throw in the towel and call it a day. The sooner they come to this realization, the better for all involved.

I agree and disagree with you, Chris. I believe the station should completely leave the air...but NOT until a deal is worked out with the Strange family. That's simply too long, and given the speed of the court system, you couldn't keep it dark for more than a year, as per FCC regs. You've got to present a ream of paperwork just to request a dark STA for six months. I would take it dark for a week and then come back with a completely new format and call letters.

I don't believe Entercom should be FORCED to sell their license by way of an FCC edict. HOWEVER, I do feel that a fine steep enough (as in based on the company's total revenues) would be an appropriate punishment. I don't know if that's realistically possible, but it has to be more than a financial slap on the wrist. It has to be painful to a degree.

Entercom is NOT a bad company. I worked for them when they had properties in Pittsburgh, and they're very good about giving their local operators free rein and trust their judgment. Unfortunately, this was a case of very poor judgment on the part of the local management. I don't think Joe Field needs to be lynched for this. Completely changing the station's format, call letters and image might help them in the courtroom as a gesture of good faith on their part.

It wasn't the call letters, the format or image that contributed to Mrs Strange's death.

Entercom should set up a trust fund for the children...and maybe donate some funds to a non-profit that aids children who's parent(s) died in a tragic accident.

Entercom is one of the best at giving their local operators free rein, in which case, it would be unfortunate if this caused 'em a license or even an outrageous fine. Certainly, they need to take some responsibility for their local staff, so Charlie's suggestion of a generous trust fund for the children certainly makes sense.

I think Kenhawk and Charlie Profit have the right idea. It is (finally) becoming clear that Entercom needs to do far more than they have done thus far to demonstrate some level of contrition. Simply continuing on with business as usual is callous and cold-hearted.

Shutting the whole operation down (i.e. "going dark") for a respectful "mourning" period would have been a step in the right direction. Sadly, that opportunity has probably now passed.

Anything they do from this point forward will smack of litigious-calculation and self-serving opportunism; besides the fact that Mancow has already beat them to the punch. In situations like this, time is of the essence. Entercom has managed this whole episode as poorly as it could have possibly been managed IMHO.

Of course Entercom is "not a bad company". But it must be acknowedged that sometimes the best of companies do BAD things. In those situations, companies need to be proactive and forthright in making up for bad actions. Besides firing their staff, Entercom really did NOTHING... and in so doing, they made a BAD situation worse.

Keep in mind, this very well could end up in court. Nobody says the Strange family has to accept a settlement offer. I know if this happened to my wife (God forbid), I would want to make an example out of Entercom. I would want Entercom to feel the pain that me and my three mother-less children are feeling. Given that they (Entercom) have done so little to show the least bit of concern for their actions, it's likely that a jury would treat them very harshly.

Very, VERY harshly.

For the sake of discussion, is it not possible that Entercom has been doing something... just not in the public eye? Simply because we have not personally witnessed this event being addressed does not necessarily mean that nothing has happened. After all, we aren't the people who lost a loved one. We aren't the people seeking reparations and closure. I'm not saying this is what I believe to be true. I'm only interested in examining the possibility of it being true.

No...it wasn't. It was the antics of those associated with it that did. However, this station should not be allowed to continue the way it is now. I don't see how it can.

> For the sake of discussion, is it not possible that Entercom has been doing something.

Yes, it's entirely possible.

It may well be that Entercom, suspecting a rather large pay-out is looming no matter what they do, may be working behind the scenes to settle this thing with as little PR bleeding as possible.

Y'all (yes, I'm in the South) may recall I suggested that the best course of action would be to make such a move. But, my view and their view may diverge.

Sadly, if this is true, it may be a bit late. In my opinion, Entercom has at least appeared disconnected on the destruction it seemingly has caused, and the PR cost has been high. But, to get in front of the issue and show some degree of at least feigned contrition, even at this late date, would make a good start at defusing this unfortunate situation.

Or, maybe not.
