The future of WBPT 106.9 The Eagle

Friends, this is not a gripe, it's a concern. I love 106.9 the Eagle, but if they don't widen up their variety a bit, I'm afraid they won't be around much longer. Rock 99.5 is calling themselves, "Birmingham's only classic rock station." I hope this is not something in the making for the COx Station. Hurrican SHane, the program director there is doing an awesome job, but something has got to give. It'd suit me if they switched back to oldies and became WODL once again and made their branding, "Birmingham's original Oldies 106.9. I don't think I can stand to see another fine classic rock station flip to talk radio or some foreign speaking station. Gospel, yeah, I can see that, but al lthe other can just stay where it's at!

I'm not sure that Cox would do anything with The Eagle, considering that the company is taking the same exact approach to classic rock in Atlanta with 97.1 The River. Eagle's ratings are steady and the station gets huge numbers even in counties that are not counted in the Birmingham market ratings. The station has always had a tight playlist, but so does The River and it is a winning approach for Cox. Classic rock is never going to be a ratings behemoth, but WZZK is more than fitting the bill for that, so as long as The Eagle stays steady there's no reason to ditch it. Just my opinion, of course.

I'd hate to see 106.9 flip, it's the best alternative i have to anything local that still picks up up here on the TN line

Keep in mind that Cox also runs the exact same format in Tampa and Houston. Both are doing just fine. I can't see 106.9 The Eagle going anywhere given that it's a concept Cox has been able to make work and is definitely a concept the company believes in.

The Eagle's working in Jacksonville, FL too. 96.9 The Eagle, "Jacksonville's Classic Hits Station." It has the same voiceover artist and everything.
