The Future of WELJ

Despite what the article says, WELJ is not carrying WPLJ's programming, during most of the day. I believe they do broadcast the Scott & Todd show from 'PLJ during mornings. The rest of the time they are apparently running their own hot A/C preogramming. There are dj's, but they may be voicetracked.
I'm checking it out now online, and like much of what they're playing.

WELJ: http://www.1047welj.com/

Knowing some of the DJ's personally, I can tell you they're live, but part-time employees. The only thing they simulcast with PLJ is Scott and Todd. I know I saw a citadel job posting last week for a long island salesperson for ELJ. I think any buyer will see the CT market isn't viable for 104.7. It's a shame many of those ELJ employees will probably be out the door.

Not necessarily. There are a LOT of signals in the Hamptons, and outside of the summer months, it's a crowded market to sell airtime in. 104.7 did respectably as a SE CT targeted station in the past. I could easily see Red Wolf buying that signal to complement Jammin' 1077 and Soft Rock 106.5 in that market. The only other major owner there, Hall Communications, is maxed out on FM's so they wouldn't be a candidate.

I suppose another LI or NYC based broadcasting group could buy WELJ and use it as an East End simulcast partner. Maybe ESPN could scoop it up to relay 1050 in NYC now that 107.1 looks to be going religious. Then again, there's always the possibility that EMF could swoop in and make it a K-Love repeater....

Having sold radio in SE CT for the better part of a decade, I can tell you that 104.7 NEVER did respectable. There are a lot of stations vying for the dollars in Groton/New London/Norwich, and frankly Citadel is the odd man out. When it comes to combo buys of course they get a piece of the pie, but very few if any clients are seeking out WELJ as a standalone buy.

What a shame as I find the WELJ format similar to Beach Radio 104.7 that aired there in the 90s.
This could possibly be bought to relay Party 105.3, since the WPTY signal is pretty much gone once past Southampton.
It could be a wise purchase for JVC, with Party FM probably doing well in the summer beach crowds in East Hampton and Montauk.
I really would hate to see it relay talk or ESPN. Perhaps the new owner can keep the current format? The airchain is very clean too, much like the old Beach 104.7.
I wonder what studios the WELJ programming originates from? NYC?

@fmradio1: I thought the max number of FM's one can own in a market was five. Hall currently owns three FM's (WCTY, WNLC, and, of course, Kool 101, along with WICH-AM).

In a market with fewer than 14 stations, one company may own up to 50% or 5 full-power commercial signals, and no more than three on the same band.

New London has 12 stations according to BIA, so you're limited to 3 FM's. 104.7 is part of the New London metro, according to BIA.

So Hall couldn't buy it? Could they divest an AM from their cluster to get it?

I think Hall might try and make a run at a few of those Harrisburg Operations.

No, they'd have to divest an FM in New London, you can only own a max of three on the same service in New London because there are fewer than 14 stations.

Harrisburg is a different story, though... with 30 stations in the market, the rules allow for max ownership of 7 stations, and four on the same service. Hall only has two FM's and an AM, they would be legally eligible.
