The Future of WKOX is here....."Rumba"??

I was looking online at JAMN'S job postings and saw this.....looks like the "secret" is out. Whoever goes for the gig, make sure you have a nice severance package in your contract...the lifetime of CC is not good right now in Boston! I also found it interesting that they are hiring for a Production Director and a Full Time Personality seeing they just let go of long time Production Director Doug Macaskil (sp?) and night jock Maverick due to "budget" moves. Strange place.....

POSITION TITLE: Sales Manager for WKOX-AM and WXKS-AM
DEPARTMENT: Sales

Boston’s newest AM station format “Rumba,” aimed at Spanish speaking listeners, is looking for a seasoned professional to head up our WKOX-AM/WXKS-AM sales department.

Yeah....that through me for a loop....why do the contest like you care when you have the new format posted on your own websites and are hiring????

Maybe with all the layoffs, they forgot to tell the custodian who handles the web sites (along with acting as the receptionist and overnight jock) to hold off on the post until they announce it. This is what happens when your entire stations staff goes from 55 to 3....I can only imagine what mistakes will be happening next! Radio One Boston had more employees than CC does now.

And so there it is, ladies and gentlemen, the present and future of smaller AM signals owned by huge companies.

Or formerly huge companies that have cut to the bone to try to keep the bottom line above water.

Not that I don't think Spanish language programming can work on those stations, I definitely do.

But I think it's still going to come through sounding "el cheapo" when they don't staff it fully.

Called up a friend tonight who does talk on a 50,000 watter and heard the disappointment in their voice
re: Air America / Boston's Progressive Talk. So even the "competition" is listening.

There are some of us who listen and who are fans, despite the bad signal, bad commercials, dreadful dreadful psa's. Raccoon gets his wish!

Well, a bit of schadenfreude maybe, but there should be progressive talk shows on the air--maybe on the bigger stations if they're good enough. And if there's any future for prog-talk it most likely comes from Jones rather
than AAR.

more at http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com that is indeed showing the "rumba" format. Isn't that the thing
that sweeps up your floor? No wait, that's a Roomba.

In Prov. (see their board), CC axes Howie Barte and Arlene Violet and adds syndie Quinn and Rose
and Hannity. Mike Harrison of TALKERS is quoted in ProJo article that this is not a good time for
local talk hosts as stations go syndie instead.

After reading the original post by radioguy06...I couldn't help but wonder if the entire WKOX sales staff will be expected to "rhumba" or "dance into the front doors" of perspective new clients? ::)

Maybe we should bring that old line from Drake-Chenault: "ALL RUMBA--ALL THE TIME! ;)

So, how long before INS gets one of those things that tells you what radio station a car is tuned to (like they have outside of the Tweeter Center) to track which [EDIT] trucks are tuned to WKOX-AM and WXKS-AM and make a bust? ::)

Lucy, are you implying that red-blooded legal citizens don't listen to music with a Latin beat?
hee hee.......

um...

i find it unfortunate that the word that was edited was, in fact, edited.

by the way someone on the WKOX/WXKS messageboard said they were told by a receptionist
at CC that the format would end on 12/22...not sure if they're going to all-Christmas or right to
rumba or who knows...

I've become hooked on Air America, despite the lousy signal of 1430...I mean, if you're driving to work at 7am, on a heavily traveled highway, and you CAN'T PICK UP the friggin' signal in all-important morning drive, then how are you supposed to get ratings???

I enjoy most of what Air America and Jones Radio Network offer. They are the antidote to the moronic, conservative gasbags who have a knack for getting just about every issue exactly wrong!

Well, those on the right would probably consider much of AAR/Jones to be moronic so it's a matter of your
politics. Conservatalk has had "a 20 year jumpstart" on liberal talk (though there were efforts in the past:
Jesse Jackson, Hightower, Cuomo, Alan Colmes, etc.) and maybe with time liberal talk will find itself in
better straits. You might actually find some of the so-called conservative talk stations trying a show
like Miller (WRKO _did_ once run her), Schultz, or Hartmann.

And maybe the new owners of AAR will find a way to promote it more, get on better signal-ed stations, and so on. Then again those who hunger for left-leaning media do have it in plenty of other places, whether it's
NPR, local & national TV, books, magazines, websites, Hollywood, music, and so on; so far it has had
marginal success at best in radio but who's to say it may not eventually work up to the same level as
Limbaugh et al.

The weird part is that I read a post on a messageboard (forget which one) from someone who said they
wanted to like AAR/progressive talk but found that it wasn't entertaining enough: this from a network (and I'm including a Jones show here too) that hired mainly entertainers (Franken/Garofolo/Springer/Miller)

Schultz's jump to the noon slot could prove interesting: maybe if he gets on some half-decent stations
he may bleed away some of Rush's listeners--those who are more moderate, or tired of him and other
choices (O'Reilly for example).

If prog talk is to succeed: better signals...LOCAL daily show...better promotion...interesting hosts etc.

To say it the way our junior Senator might, if you go about making progressive talk shows the right
way (what I'd said above), you have success; if you don't, you get stuck with Rumba.

>>a knack for getting just about every issue exactly wrong

But they make their shows attractive enough for the "big" stations to run them, which is why Limbaugh
has 15 million listeners and even the most successful prog-talkers get 1 or 2 million at best. It could
improve...Would a bigger station in town take a chance on prog. talk? In a state where Democrats
hold about 98 per cent of offices, there will be no prog. talk station on.

Vermont's biggest city, Burlington (33K people) has a prog talk station. Boston won't...And say what you want about Clear Channel (and yes boy are they the grinch this year) but note that without them you wouldn't
have had "Boston's Progressive Talk" for just over 2 years. Entercom? Nope. CBS? Nope. Greater Media?
No. (Though who knows there is still the odd chance an AAR or Jones show could wind up on a WTKK
or a WRKO...)_

Probably a domain name speculator (grabbed a name and is hoping to sell it to CC, for a price) but who knows:
Rumba1430.com and RumbaBoston.com are registered to a Jose Molina of California (got registered the other day)...hmm. Someone in Florida got rumba1200.com--but for good reason. There's a station down there with that format.
WPTK, Pine Island Florida

>>YA EL SUR OESTE DE LA FLORIDA TIENE SU EMISORA DE SALSA Y MERENGUE... RUMBA 1200!!!

Could very well be Jose Molina, owner of KPHX/Phoenix, who used to own a bunch of Spanish-language stations, some of which (like the ones in Albuquerque) he sold to CC. Maybe he's just having some fun...

"Rumba" is not a format. It is just a name, and it means "party."

"Me voy de rumba" means "I'm going out to have fun."
