The future of WSB Skycopter/Skyplane traffic

Doesn't NewsTalk 750, B-98.5 and Channel 2 Action News share the same helicopter?
No, WSB Radio doesn't use the Ch. 2 chopper. It wouldn't be practical as they have different priorities.

The Channel 2 helicopter is a Bell 206B JetRanger. Traffic chopper is a Robinson R22. The R22 is much cheaper to operate since it uses a piston engine. The Jet Ranger is turbine powered, costs a bit more to operate the Jet Ranger verses the R22.

huh? but I thought you never said he flew in a Robinson R22?

Merry Christmas

1.) When you hear Captain Herb's voice on the radio and he's reporting traffic, is he actually in the helicopter, zooming around the city and giving WSB listeners traffic reports? Same question for Kim McCarthy. Is she truly in the SkyPlane giving reports? Or are Captain Herb and Kim McCarthy actually at the WSB studios getting traffic reports phoned into them by METRO? I've heard of stations using voice effects to make it sound like their person was not in the studio when actually they were and I'm wondering if the same holds true here.

2.) Who are some of the people who actually work for METRO that you occasionally hear on WSB? Which traffic reporters are exclusively WSB employees?

:)Answers:

1) YES, Cpt Herb is actually in the helicopter, zooming around the city and giving WSB listeners traffic reports during the AM drive. Yes, Kim McCarthy is actually in a REAL aircraft flying around Atlanta. METRO uses the info they give, to report on other stations. WSB gets the info 1st.

2) The only traffic reporters who work exclusively for WSB are those you hear on-air between 5am-8pm (m-F)

Traffic reports on 750 have become like ambulance chasing. How else to explain Captain Herb talking so fast when the traffic is going so slow? I can hardly understand him.

He must practice saying the following as fast as possible before going to bed at night:

"Sunshine slowdown on the southside, fender bender at the glenwood connector, things moving slow at spaghetti junction, Kim McCarthy in the skyplane.........Captain Herb Emory newstalk 750 WSB"

Time is money! Herb only has 15 seconds to get as much traffic info out as possible.
Say he takes an extra 15 seconds. Do you have any idea how much money WSB can sell a 15 second spot for? If they even have an avail??
Learn to listen faster.....

I have no doubt that he tries to overdramatize things since the traffic scenarios rarely change much from day to day. He makes every report sound like an atomic bomb is about to land somewhere.

Isn't that what ALL news outlets do? We have some showers in the area right now here in Louisville. It's almost like the TV people are hoping a thunderstorm strong enough to spin out a couple of tornados pops up.

is he a real captain, or do they think we're just all idiots?
I think he was just known as Herb Emory when he did reports on Star94

Captain Herb is a great moniker. It gives him a brand that no one else has.

As for talking fast, traffic is parochial; you're only interested in what is happening where you are. So, since you only need to hear that sliver of information that pertains to you, and not the entire report, traffic reporters can talk as fast as possible to get in as much info as possible.

But this is basic radio knowledge. Something that seems sadly lacking on this board.

sorry but from a listeners perspective (not inside the biz) it's irritating as hell. And wouldn't it be nice for stations to do what the listeners wants, for a change.

Just for fun:
Listen to the 'brought to you by' in the traffic report. Then drop by that place of business and speak with the manager, and tell him what you think of the reports he's sponsoring. It may not change, but I betcha a nickle the word will get back to the station.

knowsnews1: since I'm not in the radio business, I'll quit listening to the radio. From this point forward, I'll only participate and spend money on things I am an expert in.

If Herb has only 15 seconds, why waste so much time saying "captian herb emory newstalk 750 WSB"? I would think using less time for his tagline("herb emory 750 WSB") and more for traffic would be better suited.

I believe the actual quotes are (caps intended to show that Herb yells this into the mic):

KIMMCCARTHYYYYYYYYY SKYPLAAAAAAAAAAAAAANE!

and

CAPNHERBEMORYNEWSTALK750WSBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Herb says his name because it is part of the WSB product....just like the call letters are.
All I listen for is traffic and weather....the rest is just filler. I agree that Herb should slow down and "say it slower." After all, Kurt Mellish goes reeeaaallll slow when "sayin' da wedder."
But all in all I still think Captn Herb is the best as is Kurt Mellish with weather. I'm a native of Atlanta - WSB has always been the station you tuned to for accurate information -news, traffic, weather, and time. It's the only station which sends a tone at the top of the hour synced to NIS atomic clock - when you hear that tone it IS the top of the hour.
I, for one, have never had trouble understanding Herb's traffic reports....or anybody else who "says da traffic."

I've always enjoyed Captain Herb and have not had a problem understanding him. But how much vacation does Mellish get? Seems he's away 25% of the year.

I think Hullinger is doing a smashing job in the afternoons.

I agree-Hullman is good!
And I have wondered the same thing Roddy....just how much vacation does Mellish get!?? He has been there over 20 years. I think at our place you get 4 or 5 weeks with 20 years service.

Also, does anyone know the history of the WSB skycopter? Who's idea was it? Who were all the traffic reporters since it started (like Captain Herb and Scott Slade)? Does anyone recall the famous crash?

When did this happen?

The crash was back when "Captain Dave" was the traffic copter guy. Hurt his back really bad. He moved to news after the "hard landing". If I remember correctly, it was Dave Folk. That was in the days when Herb Emory was working at WACX in Austell spinning records and part time at Ring Radio... I think. My memory is fuzzy on all of it.
When did this happen?
