The Game

Thoughtful, unbiased blog piece by Roddy on the new Sports station.
http://atlairwaves.blogspot.com/
I agree its very curious that in most months since the launch, both 680 and 790 are still reaching more people (6+ and 25-54 CUME) despite the fact that 92 9 as they often say 'is the most powerful sports station in the south." Roddy's right however they're not going away, way too much invested in the change.
WYAY is in pretty much the same boat with several more months in, at 1/2 the ratings True Oldies had in its last month and reaching 200,000 fewer people a week than the music format. Big time investment here as well, saving grace for both stations is there's a ton more inventory to sell with Sports and News than the 50-52 minute music hours most music FM's operate with.

Something else to consider is that a music format on WYAY--particularly an oldies/classic hits/variety hits format--would be competing with commercial-free 105.1 (oldies and soft hits), as well as 103.7 Chuck FM (variety hits). Chuck has a pretty decent spot load in AM drive but is very light in other dayparts. Not sure if going back to music would pay the bills the way it used to.

I understand WFAN has tremendous billings. I realize CBS's national push will insure 92.9 The Game staying as is for a long time, but what is CBS's top rated 6+ NYC station? WCBS FM, In DFW KLUV is a respectable #8, Philly WOGL is number 4 (6+) all are classic hits stations in diverse markets. Somebody at CBS knows how to program classic hit / oldies.

CBS has some great All News outlets too: WINS / WCBS, KYW, WBBM, KCBS.

IMHO CBS should have gone all news on 92.9, but they let Cumulus get the jump on them and let Cox / WSB have the national CBS news feeds. Cumulus & CBS are part of the CBS radio national sports deal. I really guess there is really no cooperation between the two on the local level, with 680 and 92.9 going head to head. Did Cumulus get a "knife in the back" in this deal or did Cumulus made 106.7 all news just to force them into an expensive sports format in a city that does not really have the best sports talk fan base?

Something tells me that if you shake hands with the Dickeys you better make sure you get all five fingers back.

They do a fine job with Oldies. In Detroit, they have programmed it so that the station has strong numbers 25-54 and as a result, is 3rd in market billings. However, I read somewhere that they are starting to have trouble with pulling numbers in the 25-54 demo in various other markets, so that may have had something to do with them not opting for Oldies in Atlanta.
IMHO, they should have either gone with Oldies or CHR, as we've all seen how well Power has done in such a short time, but they decided to let CC jump on the quick ratings boost instead and opt for the more risky, long-term option.

You are correct the CBS is having issue with classic hits stations in some markets. For Mon-Fri 6A-7P Adults 25-54, in Tampa WRBQ Q 105 is 12th and in Orlando WOCL 105.9 Sunny FM is 13th. If you're a classic hits station you have to get a lot of meters 45-54 that are your p-1 listeners, or your screwed 25-54.

Savannah's WZAT is FAR more "powerful" (99k @ 1400" C). One in Birmingham is more powerful as well. Just saying.

Real power is folks in the 60dbu. 100.3 in Oak Ridge / Knoxville has one of the largest coverage areas East of the Mississippi,* but trees don't count in market size or or revenue.

I would rather own WZGC.
