THE GENIUS AT THE TIMES UNION CENTER

Today Paul Vandenburgh kicked off Talk1300's first official "storm coverage" initiative. Those close to the man say PV has been watching the way WGY and WROW have been handling storms and decided that WGDJ would take the bull by the horns and go LIVE LOCAL WHENEVER the weather outlook is bleak. So today, while syndicated crap raged on 810 and 590, it was "All Paul, All the Time" on 1300. And the big guy says that's the way it's going to be from now on. WGY may soon be down to a morning team only and WROW could compete (maybe) unless somebody calls in sick, which at Johnson Road turns into a major disaster. Paul's peeps are keeping an eye on the radio boards, too!

Headcount: PV has Fred Dicker, Jerry Jennings, Mike Carey, John Murphy, John Kowalski, Chris "The Analyst", Jeff Blair, Sandy Family, Dr. Laura, Dennis Praeger, Matt Visscher (and many more too numerous to mention)-------!

In all seriousness, all Paul needs right now is a signal that gets past Colonie, an expanded Web presence (his web site already creams 'GY - 'RO may as well not even have one for all the effort they don't put into it).

In the WQBK days I used to pooh pooh PV as a radio talent but as an owner/management he is star material. He is also way smarter than anybody ever gives him credit for. As a tech Luddite PV is disinclined to anything new but apparently with his own company on the line he is rising to the challenge.

To say that I am impressed would be an understatement, and nobody has impressed me in this business (among management especially) in a very long time.

Wow! Somebody is spouting out of both sides of his shiny public head. One half hates PV the other side can’t say enough about him. Personally, I’d say PV has ruined radio the way his nit wit hero Bush 43 has trashed the country and military and I’ve been there on both counts! PV was firmly on board when the much maligned former ownership paid seasoned professionals $7.50 an hour. Did PV not rip off his former employer right down to taking the name of Dicker’s show “Live from the State Capital”? That was the intellectual property of WROW. Where are the lawyers on this one? Then there’s what’s going down with this immoral war in Iraq. Where were PV or Johnny 45 or MT-1 or all you other patriots? I am not only offended by the way PV has no military experience but no mic presence, the way he over modulates, wheezes, belches on the air but the way he is constantly on the wrong side any issue continually and you all let him get away with it! How is this talent? What magic pill has he given the bank man, the mayor and his posse of so-called professionals who believe in George Bush who’s greatest (and possibly only) strength as President has been his ability to tell three hundred million Americans that horse pee was champagne and have most of the fools in broadcasting drink it? PV put your 3 sons on the abyss of the funeral pyre the way I put mine. I’m tired of the empty rhetoric of the past 20 years from Washington and Broadcasting. Aren’t you tired of the emptiness of these failed philosophies? Don’t get me wrong we are just as doomed with the president elect. Doesn’t it bother any of you so called “broadcasters” that the public hasn’t a clue what is going on? Scratch that, most of you don’t either. Let’s hear another empty prediction of some meaningless broadcasting change…will Kelly and Chuck finally be put to a merciful sleep? Top Jock; Top Station; How about telling the audience what’s coming down the pike for a change? How about you Johnny? Or Paul? Or MT-1 don’t you have kids that will suffer?

If someone calls in sick at WROW it hurts them a little. If Paul calls in sick it would cripple Talk 1300.

Paul can be hard to listen to when he overmodulates. Shouldn't he have learned this stuff by now? And I hate it when he says "the man" will be on the air next hour. Who is "the man"? If "the man" is "the man" people would know.

Years ago when I first listened to Paul he made it clear that his preference was to discuss local not national politics. While he may be leaning to the right on a national scale, he talks about local issues 99% of the time. And I've heard him rail about local Democrats AND Republicans. Tying him to Bush is a stretch.

How can you list Matt "Vischer Ferry" and leave off Dan Lynch?

Tying PV to George Bush is a STRETCH? He went on about his love of Bush non stop for years! You know the 18 Americans who think Bush is doing a good job? PV is one of them. The Genius of South Pearl Street does local 99 percent of the time, so what? If you don’t mind hearing all the Vandenisms: The Coppers, The Man, My man Drew, and on and on ad nauseam and the same stuff over and over again. Paul makes local boring.

If Paul calls in sick it would cripple Talk 1300? LOL! I’d love to see Al Roney go head to head with Vandenberg he’d clean his clock. “Weaks” and his side kick Custard should have been gone years ago. Leave the news chick who can’t pronounce the letter “S”. She does all the work anyway.

As for Lynch, I have a hard time listening to him do his version of the Little Red School house every day. “Let me explain the sun rise to you. In the next segment of the program I’ll educate you on how to breathe”. He thinks his audience is stupid and he’s the grandmaster. I enjoy when callers disagree with him and his infamous temper gets going. How dare they counter the Wizard of Pompano! His greatest talent though is taking a position that’s wrong like saying the economy is fine, we are not in a recession, there is no chance of a depression and then changing it after it’s obvious to even a squirrel and then going on for 3 hours to explain these naughty derivatives.

Face it there is nothing on local radio but chopped baloney with the exception of Roney. If those CC cuts materialize they’d be out of their minds to get rid of him.

It's Paul, the station owner and manager, who is indispensable to Talk 1300 not Paul the radio host. You have to give Paul credit for putting Dan Lynch, who for all his faults is NOT another right wing ditto head, on afternoon drive.
Roney is great. In a perfect world Al would be doing afternoon drive rather than Sean"Blowhard" Hannity. And Don W and his forced unfunny act would be replaced by the naturally humorous Joe Gallagher.

“It's Paul, the station owner and manager, who is indispensable to Talk 1300 not Paul the radio host.” As bad as Paul is as a radio host he’s even worse as a manager. Roast, I know you worked for Paul and you know his issues. He never treated people he thought couldn’t further his aims like human beings. His moniker “the man” should alert those who deal with him that he is delving for the gold. That’s Paul’s only talent. You are useless to this guy unless he thinks he can profit from his relationship with you. As much as he disparages State Workers and politicians that’s the mentality of this man. For what ever reason Paul cannot relate to the listener; it’s in his makeup from youth. Roney however has his finger on the pulse of what listeners are thinking and feeling unlike anyone else in the market.

Roney is morning drive, period! Gallagher replace Mr. Weaks? Chuck, I’m afraid the only roast you’ve been eating is possum and it has affected your brain. Joe is a great guy but his act is so inane he should do the “R-wing” circuit at the mental hospitals. This is my point that this market, in fact radio everywhere, is so malnourished for substance, that they think Weaks, Gallagher, Baldwin, Vandenberg, etc. are great radio hosts. Listening to Weaks is infuriating. He mumbles, interrupts himself, laughs at his own bad jokes and completely swallows the Call Letters. This guy, if he ever knew the basics, isn’t listening to air checks and his boss is too afraid to tell him he can’t communicate. Yesterday morning he interrupted his own story. The news chick is very polite but you can hear that she is tolerating a grandfather figure. (Weaks will soon be 70).

As for Paul getting credit for putting Dan Lynch on the air, yeah he did. But Lynch was only useful when life was easy and it’s not anymore. Lynch is behind the curve. Won’t believe or admit what’s happening until it’s painfully obvious. Roney on the other hand is giving listeners a place to air their anger and frustrations and people are mad. Dan is old world where he has to be the guy that not only discovered the problem but came up with the solution and he ain’t the man for that. He talks endlessly and when he finally takes calls monopolizes the conversation and screams at callers not to interrupt him. PLEASE! This is talk radio. A format that non-broadcasters like Paul and Dan and too many others in Radio can’t appreciate; They let anybody do radio these days just like anybody can be president.

I have not worked for Paul or even met him so as far as how he deals with people I have to take your word for it. Believe me, I'm no fan! My point was that PV runs that station singlehandely. Listener calls are way down his list of priorities. He rants and raves then never gives people ANY chance to contradict him.
As far as Dan Lynch, I listen to him every day and he does let callers talk, sometimes way too much. He has a lot more patience than I would. There's one caller who's on almost every day and Dan has shown extreme patience letting this guy go on and on. He does not have good radio instincts. He gets on a topic and lectures on and on. But he does make some good points and relates some interesting stories from his long career in journalism. Al Roney's a much more smooth and expierenced radio personality who knows how to get listeners involved.Al's great but Dan's lived a lot more life. Dan's pompous at times but compared to jerks like Limbaugh and Hannity at least he's openminded for logical discussion.
The bottom line on Gallagher is he makes me laugh. And compared to Don he's a superstar. Don used to be a lot better years ago but now he's just aggravatingly unfunny.
My suggestion to improve radio talk in this area:Make WROW an Air America outlet.

Listener calls are way down on PV’s list of priorities because listeners are on the bottom of Paul’s list. He’s not aiming his message at an individual; he’s talking to the “man”, the handful of them that he finds useful. Just one more example of a radio basic PV and a bunch of others never learned. “Folks” “Ladies and Gentlemen”; you speak to one person. I’m in the car by myself and hear “folks” I know he’s not talking to me. Another horrible habit that most of these stars have is inviting people to call, keep them holding for 40 minutes and then not letting them even get a full sentence out of their mouths before the host interrupts and talks over them. If the caller tries to continue they are reminded that it’s “my show” and are dumped. These guys come across as the rude self absorbed bullies they are.

That caller that Lynch allows on the air every day with his bad jokes and useless references is no threat to Dan because he kisses his rear, so he’s kept on, unlike “Steve” who has been warning us for years that the financial dike was about to break. The hosts make fun of him and then the loyal lackeys call up and beat him up. Steve has been right on the money; it’s very revealing that these guys are so threatened by him.

You cite Dan’s life experiences and long career in journalism. I get tired of hearing his “when I had tea with the queen” tales. Who cares? He may be a great journalist but that doesn’t make great radio. His show is so structured by his “segments” and his lesson plan for each show that he doesn’t get into the meat of the minute. Roney is the best at this and the competition should take note (Al has to be careful not to interrupt so much and try to talk louder and faster when callers don’t yield to his interruption. It’s maddening to listen to two people try to talk over each other and they are all guilty of this).

Lynch believes he’s baptizing the great unwashed in his fount of knowledge. Maybe he should just do a GED show on local access or write more books dealing with his fascinating life. I want local radio to address all the issues that are killing our way of life. I don’t need a dissertation on how to boil an egg. I don’t want to hear the fights about the coppers, or the politicians. Dr. Joe may not be a natural born radio man but he is truly on the air to foster knowledge and an honest exchange of ideas. If I had a station Al would be morning man and Joe Parisi afternoon host.

I’m with you Roast on Hannity and Rush the windbag. For years they have been touted as “entertainment”. It’s been propaganda served up as entertainment because their dogma of greed served the Mays family. In this climate we can’t afford either. As for ‘ROW any format change would be better than what they have now but that won’t happen until a new owner comes in, preferably one who knows something about broadcasting and cares about people.

Hey Ax, the tin foil in your hat must be coming unraveled. The point of the exercise is to make money. If Gregorian Chants could turn a buck that would be a format. If leftist politics could turn a buck that would be a viable format too, as it turns out though it has all the revenue generating ability of Gregorian Chants... no, I take that back, fans of Gregorian Chants are religious enough to dig into their pockets and pony up while leftist formats target people who can barely afford Walmart.

As for callers, they are only one element in a production just like imaging liners, topics and positions selected, bump music (which is programmed for the show's target demo), etc... The "man" is the guy who writes checks to the station and the listener who writes the calls down in their diary). News and information is targeted to the most affluent zip codes with the highest diary return percentage (at professionally run stations - that leaves out this market in total).

Excuse me.... AL F'in RONEY is MORNING MATERIAL??

hahahahahaha ROFLMFAO!

No way is he morning drive material. He's just a college kid who thinks he knows a few things. For those of us who've been around a bit longer than 25 years, Roney comes off not knowing a whole helluva lot at all. His show during the ice storm was freakin laughable (then again WGY as a whole was a joke). The kid can't even correctly repeat what a caller just said to him, much less correctly comprehend it. That, and his HUGE lack of knowledge of the local area make him anything BUT morning material.

hahahaha I just cant stop laughing...

Al and Paul keep up the good work. Hey baldie or do i say baldies. you are the same person posting here under all four of these names. us at CC know who you are. a jealous baldie who dresses poorly at press events. look for the bald head with wrinkles on his sloppy clothes. if only you put all this hatred and evil into something good. leave al and paul alone. shame on you. God bless those at CC. hope everything works out with your jobs. plenty of good people there. some must reinvent themselves but will be ok.

Oh junior, you couldn't be more wrong. You see, I work for a living. I don't have either the time or the interest to show up to a presser or event put on by *any* local station, much less anything Crap Channel regurgitates. I just know a schmuck when I hear one, and Roney tops the list at GY - regardless of what his cheerleader says here on R-I.

Now if Uncle Don is forced to retire this year, I'd be willing to bet that Gallagher stands a better chance of taking over his spot - that is assuming the overlords in Texas don't make this weekend his final one at the once mighty GY. Heh - me thinks I might aircheck good ol' Joey G. just in case.

Oh, I have hair too. Sorry to disappoint!

Well, come Tuesday someone is out at Clear Channel Albany. 1 Big name? Several? You'd have to think the top $$ makers have alot to think about over the weekend. Who knows the salaries of the big players at CCA? I highly doubt it's the New School kid who makes $8 per hour.

Actually, I'm pretty sure he never got to college. He's got to be at least 40 years old, and has lived in the area for most, if not all of his life....so you're right and wrong on this...Roney is NO WAY morning material! Besides, as a person, he comes off as a real jerk. You're also right that he doesn't seem to know much.
