The golden era of AM HD

Apparently.
I was an early adopter of HD Radio. Despite its many detractors, the ability of adding new streams on FM has its potential, though it's not yet realized.
AM HD is another matter entirely. It doesn't work well where deployed, at night it's useless (assuming with tight, narrow-banded patterns it works at all), and it requires compromise to the analog stream. Plus, there is an argument that it violates international treaties when the overly-wide signals impinge upon clear channels for other countries. In short, AM HD is a total disaster.
So, no. I ain't missing it.
As of yesterday, though, WDIA was still lit up in HD.

I was on an advisory committee many years ago when HD was only an idea. Several of us argued against the notion of a digital signal on the AM band.
But hey, AM HD radio does eliminate power line interference. That is, until the receiver drops back into analog because of too high an error rate due to …uh, power line noise.

About the time I hit 'send', they must have restored the HD. I went into the AM HD experience as an extreme skeptic. I am aware that its destrutive footprint pretty well outweighs its benefits. But after getting past the initial feeling of 'this sounds like swishy mp3', I got used to the sound, and missed it when it wasn't there.
