The Gong Show returns

People forget the late 80's version hosted by San Francisco jock Don Bleu...

"Comedy Central has green-lighted an updated version of the 1970s talent show, ordering eight half-hour episodes of "The Gong Show With Dave Attell," to premiere July 17..."

July 17... A Thursday? What, a new show that's not going to piggyback South Park on Wednesdays, for a change?

They tried to do the "Gong Show" on "What's Happening," without Chuck Barris and it didn't work then and it won't work now

LOL

:)

Chuck Barris is at least 80 these days. He sold off ownership of the Gong Show to Sony Pictures TV some time ago.

Gene Gene was an NBC stagehand who retired some time ago. He lost at least one leg to diabetes. I'm not sure if he lost both. I'm also not sure if he is still living.

The new deal is for 8 episodes only. Unless it's somehow a monster hit, that will be it.

I tremember that episode -- someone offstage introduced the choral group; after they did their bit, the judges gave their scores, with the last judge declaring them the winner then and there.

In the real world -- there were two other attempts at a new Gong Show after the original ended -- one in 1988 (with Don Bleu as host), and one in the late-1990s on GSN, as "Extreme Gong" (with George Gray as host) -- both were short-lived.

In other words, the Gong revivals got gonged!

Unfortunately, Gene lost both legs but is still alive according to IMDB.

The cool part is that Gene was totally random. It wasn't a everyday (or every week) thing. When we were kids, my brother & sister & I would jump up when we heard Gene's music and dance. You Tube:

..."Extreme Gong" also introduced two features. For live cablecasts, they had no celebrity judge panel but the audience could phone in its reaction; if the calls were more negative than positive by 45 seconds into the act, it got the hook. And, of course, there also was The Babe Of The Day (unfortunately, IIRC, most of them were never identified)...
