The Grammy's

WOW! Interesting show last night. What did you all think? Mick can still rock, he ripped it up! Did you see Bieber's face after he lost? Lady Gaga, Celo....the list goes on. The usual suspects don't win the big awards. What gives?

I just read an observation that the Grammys are becoming more about introducing new artists to a huge TV audience, and less about rewarding established ones. Makes sense to me. The more controversy & surprise they can stir up, the better. Toss the lame jokes and ho-hum speeches and get on with the show. Bob Dylan is backed up by TWO new bands at once. Obscure Canadian band Arcade Fire gets Album of the Year. Angry Justin Bieber fans hack Esperanza Spaldings' Wikipedia page with insults. She was the most-searched item on Google this morning. Now everybody can spell Esperanza, even if they've never heard her music. Soon you'll see big Afro hair-dos appearing on aspiring hipsters. Justin Bieber is so... over.

Talking about the Grammys is making feel old and out of touch. I was reading Jeff Miers' wrap-up in the News this morning. And I quite half-way through. Of course, I'm aware of Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. But I don't know their music, so I just gave up on the article because I didn't know what he was talking about. Of course, Mick and Dylan performed last night, so if I had watched, I would have gotten into that. But other than that, the Grammys have passed this old goat by!

Over the last few years, I've watched the Grammys to find out just how un-hip I am. It turns out that last night, Mick Jagger, who's nearly 70, tore it up and gave all the kids a lesson in how it's done. Meeng! (Every self-respecting Buffalonian understands what "meeng" at the end of a sentence means.) And those 'kids' who didn't recognize Mick's legacy and tutorial genius need to stay after class for some remedial review. It so happens that I missed Jagger's performance last night because I turned off the tube after Dylan did his victory lap on 'Maggie's Farm.' "How can it get any more authentic than this," I thought. Dylan personifies the "ef it all, I paid my dues, I'm a legend and I'm gonna do what I think is good music and have fun... or maybe not" attitude.

I checked out Jagger's performance on line and on the morning shows to see if it was as good or better than all my Facebook friends said it was. Roger that. The cape and attendant reminded me of Screamin' Jay Hawkins or Little Richard.

I don't want to rip Lady Gaga's shtick. I'm not 'down' with it, but it's pretty obvious what she's doing. And maybe the purists and legacies are justifiably torked because "it's all been done before." Okay, I get that. Kind of Elton John + Freddie Mercury + Madonna to the tenth power. But does anybody remember Elvis shakin' it, Jerry Lee standing on the piano and playing "Great Balls of Fire'" with his feet. Marrying his 13 year old cousin. (And allegedly killing a few associates years later.) Alice Cooper? (Marilyn Manson's grandfather.) Ever been to an AC/DC concert, a Dead show or seen Peter Gabriel or ZZ Top? ZZ Top once did a show at the Aud with live rattlesnakes in glass cases and live steer on stage. Tell me that wasn't Texas Freak!

The Grammy Awards Show isn't the Byrds, Eagles, Elvis Costello or U2. It's an over the top, mardi gras freak show for a night. The Band (the group) once sang "Life Is A Carnival". Rock n roll always has been just that. These days with a heavy dash of spectacle added to the mix. The hype often surpasses the content.

I'm no Buffalonian, but do you mean "mingya"?

Yeah. My "Italian Tutors" (Al Wallack, JP, Jim Santella, Tony Venturoli, Joe Barille and Magoo) told me that dropping the "ya" makes it acceptable in mixed company. It also helps if you give it a little Joe Pesci inflection.

The Grammys were on?

Oops, guess I missed that one.

However, I have heard of Esperanza Spalding and I've listened to her music. There was an article about her in The New Yorker some months ago which piqued my curiosity.

I thought Eminem would have at least won in Record, Song and Album categories. "I Love The Way You Lie" and "Not Afraid" are probably the two best pop records of the past year IMHO...that said, I'm not disappointed to see Lady A validated the way they were. Like many others, I was shocked to see Arcade Fire win Album honors.

Would've been nice to see some more Grammy love for Miranda Lambert. "Revolution" was the best album release last year in Country and "The House The Built Me" is the 2010 equivalent of "Coal Miner's Daughter".

Esperanza Spalding as Best New Artist? Look at some of the previous winners in this category...Starland Vocal Band...Debby Boone...Milli Vanilli. Awarding Justin Bieber - even though he was the odds-on favorite - a Grammy for Best New Artist would have looked reallllly baaad in a few years. I admit I like Florence & The Machine...maybe after they have a few hits under their belt.

It's post-Grammy Mingya 101 on the Buffalo Board! Nice.

And, somebody get me a double order hot from La Nova...please.

(Miss y'all.)

On my local board they post maybe three good topics a month...usually it's whining about the good ol' days or how all the major stations in my market suck, really educated stuff like that.

This is the board to follow...not to mention Buffalo/Niagara/Rochester has some pretty good radio goin' on for their market sizes.

Anyone add Arcade Fire yet?

Anyone add Arcade Fire yet?

What's an Arcade Fire? Blew me away on the Grammys...since I hadn't heard of them..or a thing from them!

Is that MY bad?? (or is there something "political" going on)

I have to admit the only reason I've even heard of Arcade Fire is because Bruce Springsteen is a fan. This is THE board to follow. :) We have our occasional dust-ups and some grudges are displayed over and over but we do have a lot of veteran knowledge of the business. And of course, we have "The Stiffs". ;)

Not "your bad" at all Heyday. Maybe there's more awareness of them in WNY due to proximity to Canada but what I've read about them leads me to believe they're not all that well-known outside of their native Montreal.
