The "Great" April Fools Jokes

Years ago on Star 94, Steve McCoy and Vickie Locke had Olivia Newton John as a guest. They ran the whole show as if it was 1978 and was promoting "Grease". Even played songs from that time period. Olivia was in on the April Fool's joke and acted as if she was promoting the movie and talking about her upcoming LP "Totally Hot" that was released in 1978.

It was a wonderful step back in time. Don't remember what year they did this, but I think it was the early 90's.

I remember in 1984, 96 rock for 2 weeks prior to April 1st, was promoting an upcoming format change. On April 1st at 12 noon the joke was 96 Rock was going country music. That whole thing was HILARIOUS!

Like 'em or not, The Morning X with Barnes, Leslie, and Jimmy forever wrote the book on April Fools jokes in Atlanta. They were creative, elaborate, and funny. Plus, even if you knew it was an April Fools joke (how could you not?), it was fun listening to all the people who fell for them year after year. Anyone remember some of their favorites?

I remember that. She also talked about her upcoming movie "Xanadu".

I put that bit together with Dick Meeder (GM) who brought in a bunch of his polka albums and other oddities and we made a collage of the new format. It was a Sunday and no one was there to answer the switchboard while the phones went crazy. Ron Hudspeth of the AJC fell for it too and didn't speak to us for a very long time.

WSB announces return to AM Stereo, and will play heavy metal Polkas. Cumulus and Clear Channel go bankrupt. Rush Limbaugh to air only on Hispanic formats.

What is the deal with everyone and Polka music?

Was it 96 Rock that did the WLED April Fools joke where they said they were going all Led Zepplin all the time?

I always hated April Fool's day jokes where stations would pretend to flip formats, especially top 40 stations that went back to all 1994 or something, using all the slang and everything from that generation then picked the worst songs from the generation to play. What was even worse was when the listeners couldn't even see through the blatantly fake prank!

There was one time Hot 97.5 did this "half-assed" April Fool's prank talking about flipping to country (and it was so see through that I, as a teenage kid who still thought radio could play what they wanted if they chose, knew it was a prank). A little mention here and there, then at the top of some hour, music stops, non emotional goodbye's are made, pause, then country music very briefly started playing. The whole time I was just waiting for them to say "April Fool's" and get back to their regular music.

Normally, the April Fool's pranks on Coast To Coast AM are silly, but I couldn't believe that anyone actually fell for last year's prank about them dropping Coast To Coast and flipping to Toast To Toast, a radio cooking show, because "that's where the money and ratings in radio was now". At least the Toast To Toast format cooking format with live interviews and stuff was better than a Big Foot sighting or some past dinasour-related species that managed to survived and no one knew it. I'm not sure what this year's Coast To Coast prank was.

A good April Fool's joke (mainly for radio board listeners) would've been WiLD 105.7 / 96.7 being placed on a stronger signal for a day or Q100 adding "rack city" by Tyga along with Drake's "the motto" in regular rotation and V103 adding Calvin Harris "feels so close" to hourly rotation with a half dance half booty shake 5 o clock mix. I would've done it! To make it even more interesting, lets say that all these things not only happened, but it also happened without me noticing or logging in to say anything about it! Now THAT would leave a few people thinking  ??? !!!

I think Cumulus has too much to loose by even admitting that Wild even exists.
