Legendary programmer Bill Drake has died after a long battle with lung cancer at the age of 71. Bill was the mind behind the orginal "top 40" sound of the sixties called "Boss Radio." He put 93KHJ on the map.RIP!
I remember the Drake format. From 1967 or 68 to 1972, KTSA imitated the Bill Drakes format. Having heard KHJ in LA were the Drake format started I think there is enough difference between Drakes stations and KTFA but KTSA did it well enough that they had the signature Drake sound and feeling.
KTSA, what a great sounding station during "the big t" era. (68-72?). A fond memory of my high school years. Lots of music, great jingles, minimal talk, and of course 20\20 news. As I recall they were running the Drake/Chenault "Hit Parade" on KTFM, so Bill Drake might have done some consulting for the am side.
