The great John Garry

Any idea where he is these days? Florida??

I beleive he is still in the Pittsburgh area. His recent VO work on Scott Paulsen's short-live program on The Zone was hysterical.

Truly one of the funniest people I've heard in 42 years of professional radio. Very cerebral, on the order of Dennis Miller, but far less self-conscious and showbiz-directed. And Larry was the perfect foil.

It was great working with this pair as well - as irascible as they came off on the air, both O'Brien and Garry (Knucklehead and DogDrool, or maybe the other way around) were warm and funny people behind the scenes. MsMusicRadio would very much appreciate the way they used to heckle Quinn when he followed them on WTAE (e.g., the "wimp detector.")

There was a lot of bad blood when OB&G were bumped to 96.1 as Jack Bogut came over from KD in '83. The bits skewering Bogut (time for another "senior citizen announcer audition!") were enough to force you to pull over and compose yourself, stop laughing.

Shows how things have changed. The switch to FM was considered a demotion then.

I have hundreds of John Garry and Larry O'Brien memories and anecdotes (and they belong on the nostalgia board, not here), but there's one I'd like to share from about 5 years ago, thus making it relatively recent...

John was emceeing the AIR awards luncheon and, as dessert forks were clanging, he stepped up to the mic to begin to focus the crowd for the ceremonies. He slowly began "We've been getting a number of questions about today's luncheon..." then peered over the room as the typical banquet-style plates holding the typical banquet-style fare were removed. He then dryly added, "I'm told it was chicken."

8:).

That reminds me of the story the late Douglas Edwards told about his "promotion" to first-ever CBS TV News Anchorman. An accomplished CBS Radio journalist, Edwards recalled in an interview thinking "My career had really taken off, I was doing great, and now I am being shuffled off to this toy where nobody will ever hear of me again. What a crummy break!"

Thanks for the plug. I was out of Pittsburgh in their glory years. Sorry I missed them .

At that same luncheon they were given the lifetime achievement award. Their acceptance speech was a completely scripted bit that included all of their characters and despite the fact they hadn't been on the air together for years the timing was drop dead perfect. The best radio you never heard on the radio.

To the best of my knowledge John is still living in the area and Larry lives down the street from Chuck Noll in Hilton Head.
