The great silent newscast

During one of our famous Pittsburgh Radio gatherings the topic was the WWSW silent newscast where we heard nothing but dead air except when the announcer turned on the mike to cough. Does anyone know who the newscaster was? I thought it may have been Roger Kelly, but, what do I know?

Sorry, I can't help you, though I think I recall the newscast in question. In fact, I thought you were referring to yesterday, when WPGB had a long stretch of silence. My alarm clock went off to silence and I woke up 70 minutes later. WPGB still had no audio (but it had carrier) well into the next half hour.

Does Silent Radio Control Your Mind?....

I didn't know Bob Lansbury posted on this board. I thought, actually, that he only posted to sandwich boards.

Ah, the glory days of downtown. Wonder if Lansbury ever got his mail. Remember when he ran for mayor? I never did get the chance to ask Congressman Moorhead why he was "no damn good."

Actually Bob Lansberry ran against Bill Coyne in the Democratic Congressional Primary
and received 27,000 votes!

Do you know where there is a good sandwich board I could start posting to?
You never know when Crafton Borough Council will vote to shut down a hoagie shop.

That was much later when Bob ran for Congress in the primary against Coyne. He ran for mayor against Pete Flaherty, IIRC. He used to wear a sandwich board that said, at various times: "Does Silent Radio Control Your Mind?" "Lansberry Can't Get His Mail" and "Congressman Moorhead is No Damn Good. Ask Him Why" among other things.

I think he died about 20 years ago.

Lansberry died in 1999. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Lansberry

Cool. Seems about time George Clooney made a movie about him.

I wandered through Fifth and Smithfield the other day and thought of Lansberry. He was part of the landscape there for a long time.
