In less then a month Philadelphia will host the NAB Convention. On one of the panels, a tall gray haired antique named Peter Smyth will stand up and praise himself for what he has done with his company Greater Media. I'm certain not too far away will be his market manager Mr. John Fullam with a thunderous applause praising his boss. I think this is hilarious considering both of their biggest black eyes will be transmitting thru the very air of the convention floor, the Greater Media Philly cluster.
Only a year ago the Smyth/Fullam ticket for president of the bad radio club, touted what a great idea going 50's oldies would be for 950 WPEN. So instead of putting money into Mike Sommers vision of Mix 95.7 they instead take a ton of money and promote Music on AM! This is the same company that prides itself on how high tech it is. Yes, WPEN is in HD Radio (during the day) but, nobody has an HD Radio yet... so who was listening! Let's say the same 5 people who called into that radio-a-thon they did were tuning in, because of the HD radio effect the music on WPEN sounded like it was coming thru a telephone line leaving the listeners with an inferior product. Well I guess they've become accustomed to doing that over the years.
Now the big announcement...
A few months ago WPEN let the Phillies go to 1210 so now would be a good time to go All Sports! (Is this a sitcom)
The WPEN Announcement to flip All Sports is nothing short of idiotic. WIP is Philadelphia's All Sports station and has always been the voice of the Philly Fan. This is typical John Fullam, let's flip the station and fill it with mostly mindless Satellite programming, nobody will ever notice. With WPEN's signal even with the upgrade the best thing for that station would be to run infomercials 24/7.
WMGK was the crown jewel of the cluster, so let's take some ratings from it!
At the convention they will no doubt brag about Ben FM. Well with a 3.1 that was mainly taken from the numbers of WMGK is that really a victory?
WMMR is one thing they may be going O.K. ... But 1 out of 3 doesn't make your cluster a super success.
Just My Thoughts!
