"The Groovy One" KXXK

A gentleman contacted me today and offered me three records from Rhodes Recording Studio in Dalllas (no date on the discs). They contain numerous jingles from radio station KXXK "the groovy one." Absolutely brillant recordings. I don't think these are PAMS singers on these - the gentleman who gave them to me thought Janie Fricke was one of the jingle singers on these. Probably 50 different jingles:

"The only place happenin' for groovy grown-ups"
"The happening place, the only groovy one... K- Double X K."
"The only groovy one - K-double X- K."
"Stereo 105 - The only groovy one, the place for groovy grown-ups.. K Double X K"

The flip side of one of these has a recording session with the In-Crowd "Hangin' From Your Lovin' Tree", plus two takes of a country song (sounds like a prayer for Vietnam vets, by an unknown singer).

Anyway - I would love to write these up for my blog, and was hoping someone can give me so info on the station. The only thing I can find is that it was an MOR station from 1969-1971 (later became KOAX in '71).

Thanks in advance!

There's at least one person who posts here that worked there, and I can get you in touch with 3 or 4 others...would there perhaps be a copy for me of those jingles to trade out for some information?? Hmm? Hmm?? :) Maybe get you some free publicity on "The Hi-Fi Club"?

I believe the KXXK calls went to Oklahoma City when KOAX came to town in 1971, and OKC used the same slogans and format. Like 105.3, it was a station owned by Dawson Communications. Email me at [email protected] and, if I can find it, will send you a scan of a poster from KXXK of a half-naked(!) woman who I guess was the 'face' of the station...it mentions "groovy grownups" and such.

There's an entry on my www.knus99.com/fmlist.html that will give you some more details.

Mike - thank you so much for the information. I sent you a couple e-mails, but haven't heard back from you.

I'm going to go ahead and post what I have on the blog (including a sample jingle), in hopes that someone can shed some additional light on these records (and the station). Thank you also for telling me about your site - I hope you don't mind the shout-out I gave you on my blog.
