The Harmonic Lounge Is Closing It's Doors

I’ve always believed that everything changes and everything ends. There are many reasons while the doors of our lives open and close but make no mistake, the movement is always constant. With that ebb and flow in mind, it’s time to announce that Sunday June 24th will be the last day for the Harmonic Lounge.

I’ve gotten to a point in my life where various factors have led me to make this decision. I’ve been in the broadcasting business full time since 1975 and working with contemporary instrumental music since the late 70 and early 80’s. I simply don’t want to edit another music log. I know that internet radio is ahead of the curve and that the economy is still not conducive for new business ventures like this but I’ve tried just about everything and after the amount of time and money I’ve invested in this project, I can think of other things that can use that attention and those dollars. I’m also tired of fighting the music royalty battle. I’m all for paying my fair share but there needs to be a level playing field that is technology neutral.

This has been a very cool and fun project for me to tackle. It’s been some of my best work but I want to simplify my life and concentrate on what is really important to me in the years to come. I still love the music and will listen as I always have but now as a fan instead of a programmer. A huge thanks to everyone who helped over the period and to everyone who stopped by to listen. The anniversary of the Harmonic Lounge as an internet stream is this Tuesday the 19th. The pleasure has been all mine. I’m so very grateful for the opportunity but it’s time for new adventures. Please let me know if you have any questions and during the weekend of the 23rd and 24th, the music will be the soft and easy stuff that I started out with. Thank you for stopping by the Harmonic Lounge.

Bill, I have considered you a mentor and a friend, and I am truly grateful to have gotten to know you over the past few years. As you know, I too have SERIOUSLY considered shutting my station down for the same reasons you set forth...life gets in the way, both for the good, and the bad. It's hard, man. It's hard and time-consuming enough to keep your station current and your programming tight for intelligent listeners who demand and expect the best from you as a programmer, let alone expend the time and resources to market it to the point that it is attractive to advertisers and consistently generates revenue. And we've said it before and we'll say it again. The existing royalties structure stacks the deck against Internet broadcasters to grow to the point of relevance. The more listeners we get, the more costs go up exponentially in terms of premium bandwidth for listening slots and royalties payments based on TLH. It is obvious to me that, as much as everyone lauds Internet radio, the gatekeepers will continue to fight tooth and nail to inhibit our ability to monetize it. Why do you think more and more terrestrial stations are streaming online? They know Internet radio is the future.

Your passion and knowledge for this music, and your professionalism have never been in doubt, and I have always respected your candor on this board. Best wishes, my friend, and thanks again for everything you have done for me and listeners of The Lounge. I would be honored to have you as a loyal listener and senior consultant (unpaid, of course :D).

Peace,

Chris

Chris...Thanks for the very kind words. I'm not going away and I will always be there if you or anyone else needs me or my BS so please give me a shout out.

Bill, thank you for everything you have done for our brand of music. We will miss The Harmonic Lounge, but fully understand your decision. We wish you the best my friend.
