I've heard them broadcasting twice before.....I caught them again today and actually heard them ID....

"97-3 The Hawk....Ethernet Radio"

They are playing death metal mostly. They have to be located on or right off Larkin Ave around Jefferson street in Joliet.

Funny thing....they played 2 commercials....obviously not professional ones....someone just speaking into the mic on their PC. They advertised for Auto Experts off Larkin Ave AND they advertised Basic Realty off Jefferson St.

Do pirates advertise usually? I wouldn't think they would......weird. They are also in mono.
______________

Would you by any chance know how many watts they're putting out???

The leagal limmit for a FM Part-15 unlicense broadcasting station only allowed
is 250 micro-volts per meter, which means only quarter of one watt is allowd!!!
FCC Rules & Regulations Part-15 Section 239...

I'm not sure Col.

How far will ¼ of 1 Watt get you? This station could be heard for a good 8-10 miles or so....give or take.

When I did part 15 FM it went only about 5-10 city blocks in both directions on a GOOD car radio.

So 97-3 The Hawk must be a pirate.
______________

At least about half a mile or so, in meanings; 4 blocks the most.

Well!, 8 to 10 miles huh? sounds like a 100 watt transmitter,
In which it is down-right Illeagal!!!

I have a Ramsey FM-35 1 full watt transmitter, but I can Adjust the
transmitting power anywhere from 0.1 milliwatts to 1 full watt.

Isn't that a bit too far? Or is it within the leagal limmits.
How much transmitting power did you use?

From my own observations, the pirates that seem to hang around the longest are the ones who stay up in the non-comm band and don't interfere with the legally licensed stations. They play what they want, say what they want, etc., but selling advertising seems to be the breaking point for where someone gets upset and notifies the FCC. Broadcasters don't particularly care to see radio revenue going to an illegitimate operation.

I am not pulling in "The Hawk" from where I am at (about 15 miles from that corner)

Actually, it's 250uV at a distance of 6 meters from the antenna. That usually means around 1 watt input power to the final amplifer and less than 250mW at the antenna. Don't confuse WATTS and VOLTS.

If this guy is heard for miles, he's either up a couple hundred feet or is running many watts.

That may be a bit too far to pick it up.....try to make it over to Larkin and Jefferson soon.....maybe you can sample it!
