The Herd With Colin Cowherd Back On 104.9 The Horn

A Fox sports program competing with another Fox sports program ( Cowherd vs Rich Riesen). And I thought The Horn was all local content?

To be fair, when Bob Cole, representing Austin Radio Network purchased the station, it was reported that Cole said:

He said the station's programming will remain local and sports oriented in the morning and afternoon drive times.

They never promised that the station would be 100% local even though their Facebook name is: 104.9 The Horn- Local Austin Sports

At least they have kept the morning and afternoon drive programs local as they said that they would and they have experimented with midday. I think 10 AM – 11 AM is still currently local with high school and college football programming.

It must be more expensive to run local programs or the local programs during midday are not currently drawing as many listeners. I did like the local Alex Loeb in the 10 AM - 1 PM time slot, but, he left for the Longhorn Network.

This must also mean that “Hit 'Em Up with Geoff Ketchum” is out or down to one hour instead of two hours since it was in the 1 PM - 3 PM time slot.

You bet it is more expensive to do a local show. People need enough cash to get them to work the show and that includes enough prep time to prepare for a live show each day, plan out bits and such. You need a producer and maybe a call screener on payroll too. Go with a syndicated show and you connect to the program (satellite) while the computer fires off the local breaks. The cost difference is enormous.

If they are leasing the frequency, add that cost per hour to the mix and it can be quite costly to be local.

Good detective work mouse.

I remember this being discussed (either on this board or the other board) at the time they “acquired” the station. One of the posters, at that time, said that, although the article stated that it was a “purchase”, it was really a “lease”.

Look at the parts that I bolded in this June 2015 article. I guess that there are so many different companies named in the article that Cole could say that he technically never specifically said that Austin Radio Network owns KTXX.

University Of Texas Sports Move To Austin Radio Network Stations
June 17, 2015 at 3:55 AM (PT)

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS athletics will move to GENUINE AUSTIN RADIO's AUSTIN RADIO NETWORK stations under a new multiyear partnership with rights holder LONGHORN IMG RADIO NETWORK. The LONGHORNS had aired for several years on iHEARTMEDIA Country KVET-F/AUSTIN.
The new deal puts TEXAS football on eight ARN stations in a cluster-wide simulcast (six in English, two in Spanish), with Sports KTXX (104.9 THE HORN) as flagship. THE HORN will also carry men's and women's basketball, baseball, and softball as well as "featured games" from other sports; Country KOKE-F-KTAE-A-K253AN will air football and men's basketball; Comedy KLGO-A (COMEDY 1260) will air football; Classic Hits KTXX-HD4-K287FG (CLASSIC 105.3) will air football; and Regional Mexican KTXX-HD2-K246BD (FIESTA 97.1) and Spanish News-Talk KZNX-A (RADIO MUJER) will air football in Spanish. Games will also air on the school's TEXASSPORTS.COM and a new separate digital streaming platform being developed with ARN.
ARN CEO BOB COLE said, "Since 1893, The UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS LONGHORNS Athletics programs have been the absolute definition of hometown sports in AUSTIN, TX. In 2012, we formed the AUSTIN RADIO NETWORK, dedicated to the return of 'hometown radio' -- both in ownership and programming. ARN is founded on the basic principle of being 'hyper-local.' We don't hesitate or apologize for going over-the-top in exhibiting any and all of the unique assets that embody the heart and soul of AUSTIN's proud culture. Being locally owned is just the beginning. Being entrusted with the responsibility of broadcasting from UT's biggest stage is truly prime-time! We are abundantly grateful for the confidence placed in us by IMG. Our staff is as enthused, as we are humbled."
"Our new partnership with ARN will bring more LONGHORN events and coverage to fans in AUSTIN," said LONGHORNS IMG SPORTS MARKETING GM SCOTT WILLINGHAM. "We're particularly excited about an abundance of programming in addition to football, including more exposure for LONGHORNS' Olympic sports. The university's student-athletes, teams, fans, and corporate supporters will all benefit."
"I want to thank IMG for their hard work and commitment in bringing a valuable broadcast partner into the LONGHORNS family. I'm impressed with ARN's commitment to aggressively promoting all LONGHORNS sports in new and innovative ways," said LONGHORNS Men's Athletic Director STEVE PATTERSON. "Games will be heard by more fans, in more places, than ever before. ARN is a creative, home-grown commodity that has a genuine passion for The UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS and our community."
