The History of KXRO

Great piece...presumably a sales piece of some sort. I was never sure why Morris thought these stations, this far from their home on the east coast, should be part of their portfolio. And the economy is always (apparently) going to be a problem in the market. None the less, great history story of a cool radio station. Love the calls...

I think Morris still has Central WA ... they had Moses Lake for awhile, among others. Not sure if they ever sold those or still own 'em?

Simple answer. Pioneer Broadcasting owned stations (KXRO, KDUX) in Aberdeen, plus Wenatchee, and Anchorage. Morris wanted Anchorage because they had a print presense in that market. Pioneer would not sell only Anchorage, so Morris had to take the package. Around $32 million as I recall. Morris later bought another AM/FM (now KWOK and KXXK) in Grays Harbor which was in trouble.

Now, of course, it's Morris, or at least their print division, that's in trouble, with Morris Publishing upside down in debt which they can't pay. They just got another extension on a $9.7 million interest payment that was due in FEBRUARY, and an extension on the next $9.7 million interest payment that was due this week.

Although Morris is a privately-held company, the publishing division has some corporate debt and must do regular SEC filings, which can be found at www.morris.com

And yes, they still own their Wenatchee group.
