The History of WTMA, Charleston

Yeah, I worked at WSIB in the mid sixties and when WBEU signed off at sundown the same ole drunk would call me up and say "Is this WSHIT"? And I would always tell him hell yeah.

Someone mentioned a former employee was charged with shooting Charlie Bell. Can you remember who it was?

Does anyone else remember the "Bacaruda" ad that TMA ran for some local Plymouth dealership back in the mid-60s?

What a lie!!!!

Yea, thats the one. At the time Sea Island Broadcasting owned it (WSIB) as well as WDOG in Allendale.

We had a great time messing with WBEU, which was owned by the Trask clan, who controlled much of the area. Those were the days of station wars, jock wars, etc. Oh the stories I could tell.....if the staute of limitation has actually run out. :)

The owner, Charles Bell Sr, was eventually killed by a former employee he had wronged. On that basis alone the lime up at the PD must have gone around the block.

We ran shotgun package modeled after WAPE, which was modeled after WLS, which was modeled after KHJ....etc. Top 40 radio at its best with 18 minutes of spots per 55 minutes. God help us all...I miss it.

This is a misinformed statement or an outright lie -- Charlie Bell was murdered, not by a former employee, but by a young man who was doing yard work at Charlie's home in Hampton -- When Charlie returned home he found this young man inside his home -- The man, in fear, fired Charlie's own gun and killed him -- He then was caught a few miles away from the scene in Charlie's Lincoln -- Yes, Charlie Bell did a gew things that weren't "proper", but if you are going to tell the story, tell it right -- I worked at WSIB and WDOG on several different occasions, I don't know who you are, as you didn't seem to tell anyone, but I was proud of the things we accomplished at both stations and I will tell you who I am -- My name is John Snook and I was in broadcasting for 30+ years -- Some of my fondest memories are from WSIB and WDOG and the times I spent with Charlie, Chuck and the rest of the Bell family -- Now, the truth has been stated!!!
