The Hits are Back

Congrats to The WGRR Team--- They join KLOU in St Louis and WMJI in Cleveland at the top of the heap! The midwest loves what it knows and knows what it loves!---library formats that execute with style! Hoping WRIT Milwaukee brings it home tomorrow too!

Kudos also to WOMC and WWSW that "missed it by THAT much"

Feels like the 90s all over again

WLW is knocked down to #2 Congrats WGRR. 100.3 is not catching on at all. Last place..Wow. Time to think about Old School Radio One. I guess they won't do that for awhile though.

I doubt that will ever happen in Columbus since we have 2 stations playing the classic hits. WLW's sister talk station here WTVN has been on a downward spiral for a while.

Wow, WGRR snaps WLW's multi-year streak at the top of the Cincy ratings. AM radio is on a downward spiral nationwide. Time to play Taps. ;D

It was a tough month for News Talk in most of the results we have seen thus far (except in DC)--- But WLW will be back to #1 in April and at least through the summer-- baseball and Big News stories = Big numbers.

I've seen the same thing. Those who weren't heavily Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin and Beck seemed to do ok. WGN ebs and flows but for all intents and purposes was flat. Same for WBZ and KDKA. The heavy political talk stations took the hits instead of playing them.

WARM98 actually snapped WLW's mutli-year streak back when the "Holiday" ratings came out.

Oops! Forgot about that! :-[

Not quite. You only have to look as far as 610 WTVN in Columbus, where they have that very lineup and did a 4.7. WTVN has been in a free fall for quite some time now. I look for that lineup to fade over time, especially on AM. They're still doing fine in Dayton and Cincy...for now.

I think WLW is # 1 25-54 persons. Can anyone confirm?
They are the BEST sounding newstalk in the nation. Is there any other AM higher in the ratings?

I would say they are kinda/sorta ok in Cincy. They are down 2 full shares since Nov and had their next to lowest share since Nov in March. But wasn't KRC riding in the 5 range a few years ago consistently?

And I'll give WHIO kudos. They seem to be healthy.

But in general, the Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, Beck et al staffed stations are losing ground to locallly programmed outlets and not all politics all the time outlets like WGN, KDKA, WLW. Also note some NPR stations are starting to nip at the heels of some Limbaugh et all affiliates. Look at what's right behind WKRC in Cincy.

When someone of my extended age streams stations from his smartphone rather than listening to his car radio...well, you know the end is very much in sight for both AM & FM broadcasting.

How is that different than listening to an eight track, cassette, or CD? People have had choices other than radio stations in their vehicles for over 40 years. Certainly they're more sophisticated now, but they won't replace over the air radio. Its just more choices, like all media. I get tired of the high and mighty attitude with people who use their phone or XM in their vehicle. I like local radio, listen to CD's and to stream my phone in my vehicle, it's possible to do them all.

Same with TV - I watch local stations, cable networks, watch DVD's and stream with Netflix. Choices.

During the next tornado outbreak or other emergency, you'll be glad for a local radio station. And yes, some will be voice tracked, that point has been made a million times. Others will be live and that's where you will go for info.

Me thinks the so-called "demise of radio" is being way overstated by people with agendas, regardless of what those agendas are.

Internet radio stations that make 7 figures a year are few and far between, if you can find one at all. (And no, I don't consider Pandora radio.) The success or failure of these businesses will be directly tied to whether or not free, unlimited broadband survives, something many service providers want to put in an early grave for obvious financial reasons.

And any service, Pandora...XM/Sirius or whoever who promotes their business as "commercial free music", then does the change up and starts playing commercials shoots themselves in the foot with their early adopters. Granted, it may have had to be for the services to survive, but some people consider it, "bait and switch".(Even though, yes I know there are channels that are still not playing ads.) That will take considerable time to abate. I hear a lot of complaints about Pandora, "playing too many commercials" these days. (Geez...where have I heard that before?)

Bill Drake was probably right...that the maximum number of commercials in a set should be 1. Unfortunately, advertisers won't pay the spot rate for that "1" to be "the only one".

No offense, but you are not the norm. You are the exception.

Today, change comes at the speed of light.

The majority of people who listen to A.M. are old, and they are, or soon will be, dying.

With the exception of driving in their vehicles, young people do not listen to over-the-air FM. Even if they are in their vehicles, the young often listen to Pandora through their smart phones, or to their downloaded music via an Ipod like device.

How many wagon makers are there these days? Back in the day, plenty of folks questioned why anyone would need or want to move faster than a horse and wagon.

No offense, but I am 48 and listen daily to AM radio, where I get news, traffic, weather, though I do miss the farm reports on WLW. When I travel, I listen to both bands and to a multitude of formats. Choices, yes. I choose not to pay for radio. Am I sophisticated - yes but I don't need satellite radio. Of, and yes, I own records, cassettes and even have an antenna for tv reception (along with DirecTV).
