The Holiday Lite

Just wondering when WLIT will flip to its Holiday Lite. I know they triple their ratings when they do the flip to Christmas Songs. The flip to the all-Christmas format has started at many different dates. In 2009, the music started at 12:01am on November 14th, and in 2008, it started in the 8:00 AM. In both 2007 and 2006, it started on November 2. In 2005, it started on November 18th. What's your guess?

I'll go with the day after the election. November 7.

This year, I beat them. I flipped my "whole house FM" for a couple of hours on Saturday, October 26, but that was due to special circumstances. I went with Halloween for a few days after that. I'm planning my own Christmas flip (which blows the doors off of WLIT's uber-tested playlist) for November 19. Oldies, beautiful music, lounge, big band, cajun, classical, classic country, bossa nova or whatever the h*** I feel like before then! 88.5 FM if you're within a block or two of Crystal Lake main beach. ;D

I remember back in the 1990s when I ran my pirate radio station on 90.5 FM in La Grange that going 36 hours of non stop Christmas from 12 Noon Christmas Eve through Christmas Night was bold. Most stations played a song or two and avoided it, aside from that one year in 1995 when 94.7 did it prior to going Kicks Country in 1996.

I also did it for 5 hours on the Saturday of the Christmas walk for all the businesses in town and the trolleys that shuffled people around.

My guess: Nov 12 or first time snow flies in the air. Whichever comes first.

It was a tradition in our family to put up the Christmas tree on the Friday after Thansgiving. We would get it all done and wait till 5PM when WLIT wouuld turn on the Christmas Lite and than lite up our tree when they flipped. What fun it was for the kids. Now they flip at different times and dates so we lost the tradition. I wish they would keep it to a certain day and time but it has become a money situation due to ratings.

I think after this election and the continuous aftermath..the battle with the House over taxes...Christmas will be a much needed and wanted escape.

The East Coast could use a little Christmas too after Sandy. WLTW ("the Big Lite") in NYC is going all-Christmas once again effective this Friday, if not sooner.
