Hey guys thought I would chime in as a former radio PD. First off, Hot has been lossing for a while to WERO. Now, Hot has a new guy that, I think did the right thing. Researched what they did when they won, changed the name back to The Hot FM, which was who they were when they won. The music for the past few years really sucked ass on Hot. Now they are very upbeat and sounding fun. As far as the person who mentioned the 14 year old girl being a CHR's target. WRONG!!! CHR naturally have alot of teens listening, but NO CHR programs to teens, NONE.... A CHR demographic is 18-34 year old women, The target you strive for is a 26-30 year old, skewing younger at night because, well most Adults are watching TV. The Retro Cafe when it was all 80's had great ratings, and that fits right into the upper demo's. It's flavor, the "Oh (BLEEP) factor. they seem to only play the "flashbacks" during the morning and day, which is when the Adults listen. I haven't heard the 80's, early 90's after like 6 or 7PM. Why? Simple, teens rule the Nights on CHR's. During work Kids are not listening so that 14 year old thing goes out the window.
Somewhere along the line someone need to take a chance and be unique in radio. Lets face it, RADIO across the country Sucks. Seems every CHR sounds like the next. Is everyone looking at the charts. I personally like the way Hot FM has stepped out....
Weekends seem more "FUN" with some of these Flashbacks which seem some late 80's but more early 90's (weekends). Keeping in mind that while some may say BOB doesn't do that, Bob played Kiss "Prince", Faith "George Michael" and other "Older Songs" over the last few weekends. Bob may get some younger Numbers this time, but you want Older Numbers. Thats what advertisers BUY. If you have too many teen numbers advertisers are more reluctant not to buy that station.
Bob also lost almost a FULL share with a New Programmer there in the summer ratings while Hot FM stayed the same. Keep in mind that was before The Hot FM came back, and the Old Program Director was still there, or had been fired already.
It seems to me that while WERO has been winning the war recently, they seem to always copy what Hot is doing and that is nbot a good thing to do when you are the winner.
By the way for those who go on about "who wants to hear 50 cent and a lisa lisa song in the same set". You may not, but My wife is 34, she and her friends seem to like both artist, turns it up and Jams to good music from today and yesterday. I'm near 40, I like Bob, but I'm really into The Hot FM's new sound. Keep in mind when a women hits 28 she doesn't wake up on her birthday and go, Gee, I think i'll switch to the Light station and rock out to Air Supply....
Many Top 40 radio stations through out the country playes 80's in there Gold libraries.
And incase anyone hasn't keep up, In todays age more and more Mom's and Daughters are sharing the music they like. Unbelievable how many women loved Justin Timberlake buy 50 cent CD's .
PS: I think many (not all) music people on radio Info are male and to be honest Neither BOB or HOT are playing to you. They do not care if men are staying with them or not.
Just think about it.
