The Howling

BOB WOHLFELD A.K.A. "THE WOLF" JOINS
RADIO WOODSTOCK 100.1 WDST

FORMER WPDH AND WPYX MORNING JOCK TO HELM
RADIO WOODSTOCK'S NEW MORNING SHOW,
"WAKIN' UP WITH THE WOLF"

This is big news for WDST, but a big fall for The Wolf, from a mid-sized market to a small town independently owned stand-alone station in an unrated market. The closest market being a rim shot into Poughkeepsie. I wonder how much they are paying him; WDST certainly can’t afford a big salary. I also wonder how long Bob will stay there, until he finds something better. This must be a huge blow to his enormous ego.
On a side note, although I don’t particularly care for WDST’s music, and therefore don’t listen to them, Kudos to Gary Chetof for keeping the locally owned and operated station live and local through most of the day, even into the evening; the big boys don’t do that.

Did they let Greg Gateen (spelling?) go? Forgetting if you like the Wolf or not - doesn't seem like a fit for WDST.

No, Greg Gattine, who I believe is the PD is moving to PM drive. And you are right, although the Wolf is reunited with a former co- worker (Gattine did evenings on WPDH) Bob does not fit with WDST. In fact ,Greg criticized The Wolf’s low brow humor in a Poughkeepsie Journal when he was a competing him as the Wakin Up with the Wolf show was still on WPDH. My sense is Wohlfeld took this position just to get his washed up show back on the air. The announcement on WDST’s web site did not say is he was bringing his entourage. http://radiowoodstock.com/

The following was posted on another thread here by "johnarbuckle" in November.
"NO MUSIC, just content? " What about that longstanding WDST liner, "It's ABOUT the music?"

Waking up with the Wolf returns in November.

From Wolf's Facebook page:

"THE SHOW WILL RETURN IN NOVEMBER WITH THE BEST LINE UP FROM SHOWS PAST. WILL IT BE ON 100.9 CAN'T SAY
But you will be able to hear it on any device,. No corp BULLSHIT and NO RESTRICTIONS on content. It will be like to best of the old show ON SPEED. Details coming"

"You guys have NO idea how this show will be everything we always wanted to do but could not because of big corp radio. You will be able to hear it at home, on your mobile device, through an show app, in your car"

He also says there will be NO MUSIC, just content. If all of the 'corporate radio" restrictions are off the table, I would be thinking satellite radio. His old show was on Clearchannel's iheartradio app, so I don't see why he'd have to mention an app to hear the show unless it's not on the radio.

His team moving to 100.9 does not make financial sense to me. Podcast? Satellite?

I agree, what a step back. I don't think DST can give him even HALF of what he was making.. Although not everybody is in it for the money, he seems passionate enough to carry on. It still isn't too late for a career change.

To take a quote from his facebook page:

"Tobin, Ellen, Levy and others becoming regulars on the show."

DST cannot afford a 4 person morning show. I assume these will be occasional unpaid appearances.

I don't see this lasting very long. DST won't be getting a return on their investment.

Full quote from his page yesterday:

"Ok now it's official. Starting Monday Jan 7 Waking up with the Wolf will be on 6-10 AM weekday mornings on Radio Woodtock 100.1. It will be me and Jimmy Buiff to start with Tobin, Ellen, Levy and others becoming regulars on the show. This station is our chance to get out from under the corp BS and do some great radio. I will post how to listen online and on mobile shortly. TELL EVERYONE!!"

I don't get the upside for DST on this.

It's more likely to tick off their loyal listeners. AAA doesn't adjust well to morning show antics, witness what happened when longtime AAA KFOG made major morning show changes.

im sorry but i find it interesting..... the wolf's been in radio for a long time .... can't land a gig in the number#1 market? but he lands a job on wdst????? really, bro???? hmmmm ... theres more going on here

When you get fired in market #65...chances are that you won't land a gig in the "number 1 market"....I'd say that the Wolf is lucky to have landed at DST...

I gave him a brief listen yesterday during my morning commute. He was playing about the same amount of music during moist morning shows. He made a few attempts at humor but sounded rather mellow.

In defense of anyone going to a smaller market. I worked in a top 20 market for 15 years, then was let go. After 2 years of discovering that any other job out there(not in radio) paid $10 an hour, I took an afternoon gig in market 90-something 2 hours away for a 1/3rd of what I was making, because it paid $29,000 a year. I did that for a year before I finally got a job back in my original market. Not a picnic for my wife and kids, but it got us by. $10 an hour would not have. I grew up in Poughkeepsie, interned at PDH, but never ended up working in my hometown. Always keep an eye on it, though.

No more Waking Up With the Wolf on WDST, apparently.
Gattine is back on this morning in his old slot, having opened the show with that audio clip for the old Bob Newhart TV show where he wakes up, and it was all just a dream.
An on-air phone conversation shortly after with station owner Gary Chetkoff sort of admitted to the two-week 'Wolf era' as a failed experiment.

There must have been, as expected, a flood of complaints about the Wolf being on WDST. Radio Woodstock President Gary Chetkof said "We decided that we need to listen to all of you, so we have officially ended 'Wakin' Up With The Wolf,. We are humbled by your passion for what Radio Woodstock stands for and we are committed to remain true to those ideals ... and to stand by our slogan, 'It's About the Music.'"

Modulation is right on the money. History repeats itself, like max Kinkel on czx, and switching CBS-FM to the Jack format....they all swithched back. Sounds like Wohlfeld needs to hang up the ear cans....

I've heard The Wolf will be back on the air, in the Albany Market, starting Monday
