The Importance of ISRCs

Over the past 5 or so years since I began my Part 15 effort, I've been learning the importance of having proper metadata for each song.

For example, since I'm interested in eventually subscribing to Live365 to stream what I do, I figure that I need to have things like the ISRC of each track for reporting purposes so the royalties can be calculated properly.

All my tracks now have proper ISRCs attached. However, there are some songs for which the ISRC is seemingly unavailable, either because I don't know how to find them or because they're simply nonexistent. What do I do in those cases? Would I just use something like the originating record label instead? Or, do I even need to bother? It seems to me like simply looking at the song title and artist (and perhaps album) would be sufficient the vast majority of the time, but I'm likely not understanding something. I've also learned that the intuitive, logical explanation isn't always the correct explanation, so I thought it might be best to ask the experts, so to speak.

Thanks,

c

My recollection is that Live365 scans the song and finds the ISRC automatically. You might just ask them if that is still the case.

OK, it would be nice if they did, as it would spare me the work of finding them myself, and I wouldn't have to feel like I'm cheating somehow if I don't.

I'll look into it.

Try this: ISRC Search
Their search can be cankerous because it will list multiple ISRCs for one recording. A ISRC is generated from a modified recording or version of a recording, so it will list the year that new recording was released, but not the year the song was released.

@kc4rae I have been using that, and it's the best one so far. It's just tedious because I have to do everything manually.

@EDwalker yup.

And my efforts might be moot anyway, because it turns out that all Live365 needs for proper reporting is the artist, title and album, which I already had. Year and ISRC don't figure in!

Oh, well.

The only issue is that for songs where I couldn't find an album, I noted "Non Album Track", but Live365 wants "{songtitle} (single)" in the album field in such cases, so I'll have to make that adjustment.
