The improved sound of Houston's KMJQ

The longtime heritage urban station in Houston has stepped up its music selection choices as of the past few months since last fall. Majic 102 has improved the most on the weekends with a number of 80s, 90s and new jack swing titles thrown in between what they are used to playing. interestingly enough they also mix in disco songs which not too many urban acs will do today (besides the urban oldies or rhythmic ac's). KMJQ is not as boring as it was the past few years but they still lose points for missing out or being late on new songs when compared to similiar stations in other cities.

I agree 100%. They are also doing more mixes not only during the weekend, but during the weekdays too. And the mixes themselves also sound great!!! Majic is really stepping up their game. If only their sister station, KBXX, would do the same thing then Radio One here would sound completely better, just get their act together and stop half-assing things with their music. They need to play a little bit more local artist like they did years ago. Open the playlist a little bit more instead of playing the one J Cole song every hour every day. But for now, The Box is the one left that needs more work.

I like their new sound too :), and how they have balanced their playlist with more oldies. I suspect if there was another FM Urban AC in town,Radio One would flip to Old School like they have done in Dallas and St. Louis.

Uh, why are they doing this? Aren't they pretty much usually number 1 in the Houston ratings by default? Is some competition on the way? That would be good for the urban radio listeners, but it has been many, many years.

I highly doubt that Radio One will tinker with the station like that due to its long standing. I thought those stations went the "Old School" route (don't forget Charlotte) due to low ratings. Last time I checked Radio One evolved its urban oldies stations to urban ac in Detroit, Washington, DC and Atlanta in the past decade.

As a person who lives in the metroplex, believe me Houston, you do not want an "Old School".. It's one thing if you could hear a massive variety of classics since you are doing 70's and 80's, but when you are doing just the same ol' "moldy oldies" over and over, that sucks! That's what Old School 94.5 plays here.
