The insanity that is . . . the August ratings

Quick observations:

• Eagle in 25th place. The Woody morning Show on for over a month, had zero affect (as I predicted) on the awful performance of "The Eagle". The promos for the morning show are awful. "Get a woody in the morning." - hello 1982. The station is playing KINGS OF LEON, IMAGINE DRAGONS, PANIC! AT THE DISCO, WEEZER, SUM 41 and other bands that are so unbelievably bewildering - throw in that awful afternoon show and the 12 minute stopsets and well, there's your answer as to why a 1.6. Are they gonna play format spin again in about 12 months? Might I suggest a rain sfx.

• KERA - shining bright at NUMBER ONE with NPR and PBS. lol.

• iHeart has ONE station in the top ten, and that's Mix 102.9 - which is now beating KISS FM. (Hell has frozen over.) Mix continues an upward trend.

• KSPF dropped almost 2 full points 12+. I know nothing about this station, so does anyone know what the major shift was?

If you look at the top rated stations, it will give you a picture of who listens to traditional radio in Dallas.

It's NOT young white men. They're off in their own world, listening to their favorite rap music with the obscenities left in.

The good news for KEGL is basketball season is just six weeks away.

The difference between #1 and #8 isn't much. About half a share is what separates these eight stations.

KSCS, KPLX, & KTCK probably have the white young male demographic locked down and they're #6, #7, and #8, respectively.

It's good news if you're iHeart. They love putting sports play by play on rock stations. In market after market.

The people you'd want to play rock music for don't even own radios. Those days are over.

This is why I don't come here any more.

That's an excuse to make you think you're smart.

12 minute stopsets, the unebelievable music, the afternoon show that no one likes, and dated marketing (mail outs?) - all have contributed to this one entity not accomplishing ANYthing.

The data is comprised of all encompassing demographics. People that don't listen to radio do not contribute to the ratings. The sample size is likely smaller, and that's no excuse until you start getting down to fringe demos.

Country is 60% female, and sports talk average age is 50. For the most part, young men don't listen to broadcast radio. At least not in Dallas.

I agree. That's why it's a waste of time for KEGL to play the music you're talking about. They run long stopsets because that's what advertisers pay for.

Radio stations don't program to people who don't listen. Once again, look at the Top 10 stations.
They TANK when the Mavs are on. How does anyone on this forum not know that already?

They got their best ratings during basketball season. Since then, not so much.

Woody is mstly broadcast on Alternative outlets. I also think the are trying go after Audacy too.

How unusual for a large Texas city to have a #1 NPR station. NPR in Houston is #12. In San Antonio it's #13. The exception is the state capital and home of the state university. KUT Austin is tied for #2. But again, that's true in many state capitals and university cities.

Another remarkable station is KJKK at #3. Its playlist is nearly the same as the day it signed on, 20 years ago. (I know because in past anniversary weekends, the old playlist is rolled out and re-airs. Except for playing "American Pie" by Don McLean, every song I heard is one Jack-FM still airs.)

And a reminder that ratings don't always translate into revenue. KTCK-AM-FM is rated at #8 but it's the Dallas station with the highest billing, according to a recent BIA report. It's also Cumulus' highest revenue station of all its holdings. KHKS Kiss-FM is also a high billing station, even though it's only #11 here. The morning show is probably the reason.

You hit the nail on the head. A popular morning show wins. All the other hours of the day and night are just filler until the morning show begins again.

A couple of things to note:
KERA's jump was huge, and could well be an anomaly. Let's see if that holds next month. (I suspect it won't)

KRLD-AM's transition to more talk might be the reason for KERA's rise, but KRLD-AM also moved up, ever so slightly, in the ratings. (in other words the move to talk didn't send many of their listeners looking for other alternatives)

And this case is an example of how advertisers themselves don't always make the best decisions... or even ones based on facts. PM Drive and Middays have higher PPM usage of radio than AM drive. But a half-century of believing that the biggest audiences are found in AM drive still prevails.

In fact, usage levels by format, station and market vary considerably. Habits die hard.

Then again, the Nielsens track share, not actual usage. So there may be more to see in the details.

The real loser in the talk world was BAP. So much for the benefits of an FM simulcast.
