I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow at 8:10AM, so I'll have to wait to find out what this big announcement might be. My guess is that Santos is adding the 9:00AM to 10:00AM hour previously occupied by Steve Sweeny. I guess that, as long as Santos can find the money to pay for more time, he can do that whenever the time is available. But more time won't make his program more interesting; in fact, it could have the opposite effect.

Maybe WWZN is going to carry the first hour of Stephanie Miller in that hour. If Dial Global is willing to pay for the time (as they are apparently going to be doing for some evening time at WAZN 1470), why not?

While some stations make "big announcements" and have people tune in for them--only to find out,
"The announcement is...we'll be giving away exclusive tickets for...", this may indeed be something along
those lines. We'll have to see (and maybe word will break early). As for shaking up Boston radio, so far
progressive talk has been about as successful as the GOP in Massachusetts electorally (10 per cent of
the Legislature; 0 per cent in terms of Senate, Congress...you get the idea), but hey, from little acorns
mighty oaks grow. It may take some time for prog. talk to reach the ratings that the "opposition" (politically)
has gotten on talk radio. And who would have predicted some guy from Cape Girardeau, MO, would be
on 600 stations? :) Anything can happen.

But hey, you never know. Who would have predicted the AL champions of last year would be the Tampa
Bay Rays (traditionally at the bottom of the AL East)? My view of course is hey, whatever people want to
hear--give them a platform, see if they succeed. What's interesting about the media landscape here in
town is the chance the folks on Morrissey Blvd (no, not Greater) may stop publishing soon, though that
media source may still yet be saved. Thus the biggest newspaper presence that leans left in town would
be...the Boston Phoenix? (And even they are laying off some people, I think I read) Political talk radio
would be of even more value should "The Globe's Here!" (their old slogan) turn into "The Globe's...well,
still on the Web, but..."

So yes who knows; it could be longer hours for Santos or perhaps he will find a home on 1470 (either
with or without 1510--a simulcast on the Watertown-licensed station?) Or it could be Miller, Stephanie
(the other talk host with that surname--Miller, Dennis--was finally picked up by WRKO, albeit just on
Saturdays and often pre-empted by the Sox)

(And, oh for the record, that ballteam I mentioned is in last place again, but hey, the season's
still early :) )

As much as I have missed progressive talk in Boston (Mark Maron, Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes, Al Franken), I just can't get excited over Jeff Santos. He puts more "you know"s in a sentence than even Caroline Kennedy. It got very annoying, very quickly...to the point where I stopped listening.

Well, you MIGHT have stopped listening too soon! I also stopped for the same reason, but when Jeff's show returned to the air a couple of months ago after a few weeks' absence (apparently related to renegotiating time-lease payments to station owner Blackstrap Communications), Jeff had lost a lot of the "you know"s. They didn't go away entirely, however, and not enough of them may have gone away to satisfy you, but, for me, the program had progressed from painful to listen to to merely boring. In other words, I no longer felt that I could not restrain myself from yelling obscenities at the radio each time I heard a "you know"; I just had a problem with staying awake. Seriously, I think Jeff's style would be much better suited to late nights than to AM drive. I suspect that a lot of the folks who would tune in for a show like his in the 10:00PM to 1:00AM slot would be greatful to be put to sleep in 10 minutes.

Perhaps he needs a co-host who would be entertaining, maybe with a more radio-friendly voice, sim. to
what WRKO did when they had Todd Feinburg come in to co-host with Finneran. The talent must be out
there somewhere. Give them credit for going the local route, local issues & national etc

I don't mind listening to Jeff although there never seem to be any calls. Not one person calling in unless there's a giveaway? Also, he needs to stop playing that U2-soundalike Airborne Express or whatever name that band is (yes, I know I'm off a bit).

one more thing--everyone is his "good friend"...

I'm through being petty. He does get some good guests.

Perhaps he'll be doing the 9am hour in Portugese so he can seamlessly segue into Brazilian programming at 10am.

I kind of agree. He stuffs more topics into a single question than anyone I've ever heard. But, like someone else said, he does have good guests - very good guests and for that I keep listening.

And, it's GREAT that progressive talk is back from 6AM to 7PM, on 1510! Stephanie Miller, Ed Shultz, Thom Hartman!

Glad Steph is back on the air. I'm not quite as enamored of Thom or (especially) Big Ed but it does present an alternative.

First off, I have to congratulate Santos. I NEVER thought he could take the idea of bringing Progressive Talk back to Boston on a station with a big signal as far as he appears to have done. I still don't like him personally and I don't like his show very well, either, though I have to agree that some of his guests are indeed first rate (especially the guy in Ireland--even if he doesn't know that Opel was/is part of General Motors, not Chrysler). Still, my personal opinions about Santos are not really relevant.

However, we've sort of gotten this far before. Yeah the combination of WKOX and WXKS (AM) was signal challenged compared with WWZN--particularly at night, but we did have Progressive Talk here for (IIRC) nearly two years. The one-year contract that Santos says he has with WWZN SOUNDS better than relying on Clear Channel's largesse. But is it really? Time will tell. I suspect that if Santos is even a day late with one payment after making half a dozen payments on time (or even early), he will find himself without a contract. My hunch is that such a clause is written into his contract. So we ought to wait and see whether Progressive Talk is still at WWZN at the end of a year and learn that Santos was able to renew the contract for another year. If yes on both counts, it may finally be time to break out the champaigne.

Perhaps the major subject on the old WKOX/WXKS message boards during the progressive talk experiment was "why can't we hear these stations?" especially at night.

I mean, 1 kw from 20 miles away in Framingham (WKOX) and a station (WXKS) that cannot even be licensed to the city where its transmitter is located is pretty poor coverage.

Although WWZN's signal is far from ideal, it at least does cover the city pretty well.

And, the 0.7 rating that WKOX/WXKS used to receive will be about 0.7 points higher than WWZN gets now...hehe.

OK I didn't hear the announcement and this is the first board I've checked, but it seems like JeffK's comment about "prog talk will be back on the air but not on WAZN" meant not "it will be back someday, somewhere"
but "they went to WWZN with the Jones/DialGlobal shows" (I can't remember if Hartmann is Jones or Air
America--he switched from one to the other didn't he?). I'll have to look elsewhere for the actual times but am
guessing Santos at 6a, Miller at 9 a, Hartmann at noon, Schulz at 3 or vice versa on the last two? Pretty
sure both of the latter shows air their feeds at noon so one will be delayed.

Well, congrats on not having to depend on a nanny state government to force it back on the air. And
yes, WWZN's ratings will go up because...they couldn't have been much lower than before, eh? (Incidentally
isn't that where Cedric Maxwell got his "quack, QUACK" bit from? I think when the Celtics were on WWZN
they were saying much of the signal went out to sea where only ducks could pick them up, quack, quack...?)

According to the DX boards and e-mail lists, WWZN has the best signal in Finland of any US AM. One look at the night directional pattern explains that! Weston and Lincoln are major challenges at night, but Finland--just fine. Gotta be a lot of Finnish/finish puns that would fit here, but I can't think of any at the moment.

It's somehow fitting that WWZN is taking this route. I remember the days when the station was WMEX and Jerry Williams was considered a screaming liberal and all the right-wingers would call and bait him.

Yesterday I used the "contact us" link on http://www.revolutionboston.com/ to complain that the WWZN internet stream was not working. This morning, the WWZN stream was working fine for the Jeff Santos show, but then promptly at 9:00 when his show was over, the stream went off and is now dead. The WWZN web site has a "listen now" link, but I wonder if the program hosts have to negotiate to have the stream on for their programs?

Steve Sweeney was on at 9 but since his show ended earlier this month they have not been streaming at 9. I think they are carrying programming from Sporting News Radio in the time slot now and they may not be able to stream SNR.

When I contacted them about the missing Sweeney and Friends show, they responded that they were "working on getting him back". He started about a year ago and his contract may have expired. Maybe the upcoming format change killed the show.
