"The Jersey Shore Shuffle"

Kept this to myself for a while, but figured I would finally mention it here because curiosity has gotten the best of me ...

About a year ago, I came across a "station" on 104.1 here in Toms River ...
They were calling themselves "WRAN" (after the long-defunct AM station), complete with the real station's old jingles (and even some bits of WJRZ's jingles thrown in) ...
It was on primarily on the weekends - and then soon after, began staying on during the week ...
No announcers - however, a female was doing the liners - someone I've heard before, but couldn't quite place ...
And, for a period of time, they also did weather forecasts, with what sounded like some kind of voice-altering thing ...

Then, the station disappeared .. only to be ressurrected on 91.9 ... but, this time, they were calling themselves "The Jersey Shore Shuffle" ...
Same female was doing the liners - and using similar jingles ...

That lasted for a few weeks and then the station moved back to 104.1 - where it's been ever since ...

Format seems to be everything from oldies to current material ...
And since about July of last year, the station even streams online ...
Currently, they are at: http://96.9.146.149:8122/

The online stream is on all the time - however, the "station" on 104.1 is on sporatically, usually weekends, but during the week sometimes too ...

Originally, the signal covered a pretty wide area - it was heard in most of Toms River - and could be heard on the parkway thru parts of Brick and South Toms River - and even out west past the hospital ...
But, then at some point last summer, the signal was cut back a bit ...

Currently, I can still get them at my location, however, there is lots of static over them (whereas before, they came in crystal clear) ...
Seems to be strongest from around the Hooper Ave. area on west ...

Anyone have any insight into this "mystery" station ?

Wasn't their a station broadcasting from the Aztec Motel/Bar and Grill in North Seaside Heights owned by Captain Jack back awile playing the same music that you said....it used a small antenna on the top of the Aztec and was on 104.1....

Yes, but that was in 1996 and the station was on 104.7 ...

Can 104.1 even be a legal LPFM/translator over in Seaside/Toms River or around Ocean County? I know it's adjacent to 103.9 in Philly and Q104.3. As for 91.9, if the Brick Board of Ed isn't using it, then it's not interfering anything 8)

Actually, 104.7 was originally allocated for an LPFM station in Brick, but that never materialized ...
As far as 104.1 ... true, it's adjacent to 103.9 in Philly and 104.3 in NYC, but the frequency itself is quiet here (though, I do get a faint signal from B104 in Allentown PA on it) ...

91.9 will soon be occupied by WBNJ from Barnegat ...
They are expected on at the end of this month with an Adult Standards format ...

Don't get me started on the Brick Board Of Ed. and WBGD ...
WBGD has been silent, going on 3 years now ...
If they don't have the resources to run the station, they should just hand in the license and call it a day ...

I have heard this station. It does, in fact, seem to be strongest on Hooper Avenue from about High School South up to Intermediate North (I think that's the school...by the 'bubble'). I lose it entirely by the time I hit the South Toms River border heading south. I'm not sure that it sets out to be an illegal operation (or Pirate...with apologies to Jim!). Rather, it impresses as a 'legal' Part 15 transmitter that is feeding a transmitting antenna of high gain, which, of course, renders it 'illegal.'

I like the format, btw. Perhaps Greater Media will throw it on WJRZ after Magic 100.1 tanks! :)

Perhaps Greater Media shouldn't have thrown the classic hits format away in the first place. On top of that, at least throw in the HD2 carrier, since they already are in HD, and use their translators to simulcast the HD2 feed. ::)

Is it in any way related to "WZVU"?

No, has nothing to do with that, Nick ...
Like I said, when the station first started, they were using old WRAN jingles - including the one you hear when you go to this website: http://www.bambinomusical.com/WRAN/

Our group, Ocean City Radio Inc dba WDVR-FM, sold the 98.3 facilities (not much, but we owned land) to Orange and Rockland Utilities in 1987. They formed a new subsidiary for it's broadcast investment: Atlantic-Morris Broadcasting. It took it's name from the two counties of it's stations, WDVR in the south (actually Cape May) and Morris County, for it's purchase of 1510 WRAN from Cousin Bruce Morrow. The station changed calls to WMHQ. WDVR changed it's calls to the then availabe WKTU (which were later sold back for a nice profit). WKTU was Hot Hits, and made money, much of which went to WMHQ to cover their payroll of 22 staffers. Atlantic-Morris trimmed that to about half, but still lost money on a station that had serious financial backing and top programming efforts. They pulled the plug 11/88 and returned the license to the FCC. 98.3, now WTKU, was later sold at a tidy profit to Howard Green and remains with the Atlantic-owned WMGM-WOND group.

Now there's a Jerey Shore Shuffle.

But that would make sense! ;)

And don't get me started on those translators, especially the one on 100.7!

Watch them decide to do that once Press decides to tweak The Breeze to classic hits. ;D

IMHO, not much tweaking would be necessary to accomplish that. But I hope that they don't. I like their format 'as is.' The Breeze is, to me, the only listenable AC station on the entire Jersey Shore. WOBM and WFPG are dreck!

The FCC sent WBGD a letter a couple of years ago about being silent and they must have responded that they are still on the air. If I was so inclined I would drop in on the school and ask for their public file but why get them a 10K fine they probably can't afford? The law is , if you are off the air for one year you loose your license. There must be a senator or congressman behind this somewhere.

I'm sure a religious broadcaster would love to get its hands on the WBGD license. It's so easy to just operate a radio station for the sake of keeping the license active. Buy a cheap transmitter, hook it up to a CD player containing 59 minutes of silence and a legal ID, and repeat that forever.

What ticks me off is they jump all over pirates and allow "legal" stations to break the law.

Getting back on topic ...
Since I started this thread, the stream for this "station" has moved to: http://67.23.183.53:8122/

If anyone has any inside info on "The Jersey Shore Shuffle", please e-mail me privately ...
Thanks ...

Wow!!!

Someone changed the location of their stream... How exciting!

I was actually down in the Toms River area over the weekend and made it a point to check out the frequency and was surprised to hear such a great mix of music. When I left for home on Tuesday I decided to give it another check but nothing there. From what I heard it sounded quite professional. Kudos to whoever is the creator.

Aside from that, 2 questions do come to mind to the original poster:

Who cares? And why do you?

It was quite refreshing to hear something actually worth listening too. Also thanks for the new URL as it'll give me something to listen to at work LOL!

;D
