the key to fixing local radio

Did anyone see the commentary on Radio Insight today? http://radioinsight.com/blog/blogs/88194/fixing-radio-the-importance-of-keeping-it-local/
Some thoughts of my own,
1. I agree with the first point, listen to your listeners. A very good example of this comes out of my own market, where CBS flipped KPTK to sports KFNQ. KFNQ's only purpose is to clear the network in Seattle. I understand that progressive talk was getting at least some ratings. Now with the flip to sports, they show up only about every other book with a 0.1. Any owner that cared about the market would have likely stuck with progressive talk. On her second point, she sounds like the type of person who's easy-going but when you get her fired up about something there's no stopping her, not unlike myself. I do agree that if a station is working, there's no need to change it. David sent me the billing stats for Spokane for the last 2 years about a month ago, and what I saw didn't really make sense. At the beginning of 2012, CC fired everyone at KISC and went Premium Choice, then 3 months later they flipped KIXZ to CHR. Those moves themselves don't make sense to me, but then looking at the billing stats for both stations, they experienced a slight bump, but as a cluster, CC's billing was down, mostly off of a pretty steep loss by KKZX, even though they're the top station in the market. I do agree that the DJ in the studio needs to connect with the listeners. One thing I've noticed about KNRK's owner Entercom is they seem to be pushing their jocks to only open the mic once per music set. What's the point of having jocks if you don't allow them to talk?
