The KFRC Farewell Show...

The Classic Hits KFRC "Farewell Show" that was hinted at in the SFPPC blog the other day ain't going to happen.

I just heard from the lovely and talented Celeste Perry, who says:

Just read a post on the blog about Dave, Sue and I doing a farewell show at KFRC. Not true. We recorded little goodbye promos after we were unceremoniously laid off on Monday morning.

DJ

sad, VERY sad :(:(...may all of you KFRCers turn up somewhere in the BIG SF VERY soon!!

I knew that was highly unlikely. Why would they want to say anything positive about the place at this point. I am surprised they were able to be as kind as they were on what I heard today. I only heard Sue's though. Were any others played??

That makes much more sense. DJs are very seldom given a chance to say goodbye. They're either let go immediately after a shift or they find the locks changed when they go in to work the next day. Thankfully the latter doesn't happen often.

I clearly understand why no station wants to tell someone they're laid off or fired before a shift. There's too much risk: slander, FCC obscenity violations, alienating the audience or the advertisers.

And, at the very least the quality of their work will go down once they've been given notice. This is why when talent gives a 2-week notice or when their contracts are up, they're taken off the air as early as possible. It's easier from a control standpoint to keep them off the air and absorb the payroll expense than to risk anything they may say or do.

Much as I'm sure that the DJs mentioned here are all nice folks, obviously they didn't command much of an audience because KFRC's numbers just weren't there. People here keep harping on how important it is to have DJs with personalities on the radio, and these folks have all been around here for many years. But people just didn't care enough about them to listen to them when they had the chance. So, why even do a farewell show?

At one country station I worked for, if you're an air personality... I was told the boss doesn't allow you to say Goodbye, that this is your last show or anything.. you are to act as if you'll be back tomorrow, but that's it.. nothing.

He also instructs anyone he let go that on their last shift they are to NOT play "Take This Job and Shove It"... he's been known to hang around the building for a jocks last shift.

He's also been known to come back after a jock left and make sure they didn't drop in "Take This Job And Shove It" into the playlist later in the night.

There was also a rumour he just totally removed that song from the hard drive of both stations computers!

It's a trite song and a trite sentiment anyhow.

The only time I remember a DJ smoothly moving from one station to another was when Tom Campbell left KLOK for KNEW. The word was already out among us who knew these things that he would start at KNEW the next day, but he didn't say or do anything out of the ordinary his last day on KLOK. Nothing. Acted like he'd be back.

I must assume that either Bill Weaver trusted Campbell or that Campbell still had some ads on KLOK, and thus didn't want to rock the boat with Campbell. That's all conjecture on my part, but it's really really unusual to let a DJ finish knowing they're leaving.

When I worked at KWUN and quit for KMUV Channel 31 in Sacramento, I was allowed to stay on the air, but then neither Bill Adler (owner) nor I believed in burning any bridges. After I became disillusioned with Sacramento TV I came back to KWUN and did shifts there again.

It's a shame there was no KFRC final-final like RKO did in '86 before Tragic 61 began. Still we all have our memories.

Good luck KFRC staffers Dave Sholin, Celeste Perry, Sue Hall, Jay Coffey, Dean Goss, and Big Tom Parker.

It is very sad when a company like CBS puts what could be a killer station on with a great airstaff and then saddles a music station with sports programming like the A's. Put the Dodgers on KRTH or The Yankees on WCBS and the exact thing would happen! People will try the station 2 or 3 times but when they want to listen and the A's are on who is going to go the their computer to listen. NOBODY, unless they are at work.

Let's be real here, Harvill and Preston have less balls than brains to blow up KFRC without even fighting for the chance to see what KFRC could do following the dismal 162 game season of the A's. Shame on Dan Mason for saying he believed in KFRC and the Classic Hits format! What a sham! I hope someone has the balls to prove this group of yahoos that Classic Hits CAN work in San Francisco and it should have happened with the KFRC call letters. Hopefully, the company that tries this format will make it work without the added liabilty of violating the audiences expectations.

It's not that hard! When you're a music station, play music and promote the hell out of it! Personality radio with the RIGHT music will work!

And what makes you think it'll work if it's failed twice?

Why do you say "Tragic 61"? It was personality radio exactly like you guys want! It happens that the songs were a generation older. I happen to think that the "Magic 61" big band oldies format sounded very good. And they had the cream of the crop of DJs there -- Jim Lange, Al Jazzbeaux Collins, etc. It was well-executed and a noble attempt to try to keep KFRC going.

It is very sad when a company like CBS puts what could be a killer station on with a great airstaff and then saddles a music station with sports programming like the A's.

Obviously you don't believe that radio stations should make money. Had KFRC been doing any good they wouldn't have put the A's on the station in the first place. They have put them on KYCY.

The RIGHT music is not 1960s and 70s regrinds. The RIGHT music is hip-hop, and whiny ballads by breathy 20-year old divas. That's what people are listening to and buying these days. This is 2008, not 1968. Forty years have passed. Remember that.

One jock I worked with was let go at the beginning of the week 5 minutes before she went on-air. She was asked to finish out the week and tell no one. Real nice. If you want to know who it was and the jerk who did the firing, pm me, I don't want to be accused of trashing someone on the boards.

Do you remember when.........

Jim Gabbert changed formats at 1050 KOFY? He repeatedly ran a recorded announcement explaining that the station was changing formats, explained why, and thanked everyone for listening. He dee jay'd that last AM drive show live talking with listiners and what not.

When 93 KYA dropped the oldies format they announced it a week ahead and had a big "farewell week" playing any oldies you wanted to hear.

Remember it? Why, heck, I'll bet you there's a radio museum website somewhere that actually has a recording of it!
