The KGIL Dartboard

LA Radio has the Laura Ingraham is jumping to 1260, effective Monday. Wow, it is hard to keep score: Boortz, Savage, Beck, now Ingraham. I would think that if you are going to build a significant listener base you would keep some consistency in the lineup. Also the venerable Michael Jackson gets the boot as Ed Schultz and Glenn Beck get shuffled into his time slot as well as that of Dr. Drew Pinsky.

I agree that Boortz is a little too laid back for LA, especially against Handel but Glenn Beck seemed to be just the ticket, what are they thinking? They have gone from "Wheel of Formats" to "Who's The Host".

Wow, I'm surprised about Michael Jackson getting the ax. There was so much hoopla surrounding his coming back to LA radio.

Too bad, his was always the saner voice among talk radio screamers.

I think that the old saying that goes "The more things change, the more they stay the same" applies here.

Poor Michael Jackson -- he's had three or four "comebacks" here now, and they never work.

Perhaps he oughta give public radio a ring... seems like his commercial days are over.

I remember the first time I ever heard Michael Jackson when WHBQ in Memphis picked up his ABC Talkradio show back in 1983.

Remember how in the dark ages before streaming how you might have read a whole lot about some great radio personality but had never heard them. I knew all about Michael and his great ratings success at KABC.

But to my ears even 25 years ago in 1983, his show sounded out of date compared to the talk radio I was used to hearing on WWEE in Memphis and WLAC in Nashville.

I'm sure he's a wonderful gentleman and I agree that perhaps NPR would be the best place for his talents in 2008.

Michael Jackson's success at KABC came when there was little to no talk radio competition.

Now that we are in a world that features several talk stations in most markets (read: real competition), where people can vote with their ears and station-changing dial, his show simply cannot compete. Rush, Hannity, et al eat his lunch every day.

I have listened to him at all of his stops along the way and he rivals Al Franken for talk-radio entertainment value. He gets lefty guests and softballs questions to them all interview long. You get the idea that he is angling to get an autographed copy of their latest book after the interview is over. Lately, he has said more and more snide and inappropriate comments about individuals on the right that would never be tolerated if he spoke about Obama or any other lefty, but he never gets called for it because (1) the press love him and consider him an untouchable elder statesman (and they agree with him anyway), and (2) well, as proved by the (lack of) ratings, nobody is really listening!

I don't know that I would liken Michael Jackson to Al Franken (who put the HOR in horrible) but I suppose I have to reluctantly accept that perhaps he wasn't in his prime for his latest "comeback". But to me the bigger issue is trading Glenn Beck which they were carrying live for Laura Ingraham. I admit I don't know the numbers but I have to think that Beck outdraws Ingraham overall. If the schedule I saw was correct Beck moves to 11 until 1, lopping off an hour. I assume they are keeping Stephanie Miller on the 540 side because Beck is on KFMB in San Diego.

I have to admit that perhaps Boortz wasn't the best choice to kick off mornings in LA but he is a morning kind of show as is Glenn Beck. The kind of slightly irreverent yet informative kind of thing you want with your coffee and toast in the morning. So to me putting Glenn on there was a smart move. Laura Ingraham is a bit much to my tastes, kind of like she aspires to be Rush Limbaugh in a skirt. I thought the brief placement of Michael Savage in mornings was a total misstep and I told them so. I suppose my main gripe is that I can't always listen at noon so I will miss Glenn Beck a lot of the time.

Then there is the impression that as they did before flipping the AM format from one kind of music to another and back again. I count in recent years, Adult Standards, Oldies, Country, and Classical and now it seems like they are playing the same game with talk shows. They are never going to beat KFI and I hope they don't think that they can but if they get the right lineup and stick with it they could get enough listeners to pay the bills. I like the mix of conservative and progressive and they have decent news coverage so I can leave it on most of the day while I work from home. I can't do that with KFI or there would be a pile of broken radios outside my window what with Bimbaugh and John and Ken. Dr. Laura grates on me too but I'm not into radio psychology anyway.

A long time ago some people here calculated the average time of formats staying on 1260AM. Each format lasted about a year and five months.

Don't forget his formats of all traffic and all Beatles!

I think this was most likely a cost cutting move. Michael was the only local on the weekday schedule most all other shows are (I think) syndicated (wall-to-wall) fare. Too many shows there now. Unfortunately this is probably the end for Michael and commerical local radio. For my part I will be listening much less to the station overall now. It had been the best 1260 since 1993. BTW, the 105.1 digital subs have been down for days. Have they given it up?
