KKOB AM slips into second place, after more years than I can remember. A couple of years ago they had an 11.4 share almost double the competition. Than Larry Arhens leaves, a Personality the community is very comfortable with, who maintained a somewhat moderate tone on this seemingly right wing format. And as they say in show business the rest is history. It was impossible for KAMG to build a station around Larry alone ,or, at least in the short time they gave it, he was a very big part of a big picture at KKOB. But obviously a bigger part that KKOB every expected, they are sinking without Larry.

"The end is near" ............ "I Know some things"........ "I Got My Eye On You" John from Cincinnati (great show)

Reality Check........
Kiss has NO competitor, so enjoy it while it lasts. Congrats but the test will come if someone comes after you.
AGM is in Free fall.....Radio Lobo was the Kiss of that format great numbers UNTIL a Good Competitor came along. KAGM got its predicted 2.5 share (after all thats what that format got before) but if done better it could be around a 3 share or better and now its trending down to a 2.0 and KABG down almost 2 share points from its winter book!!!
Looks Like Univision is on track for a great spring book (now if they could do something with 101.7, back in the day as Kool 102 that signal was #2 several times 25-54 so its not the signal its the format or lack of one)

The hole in the Duke City someone to go after Kiss...should Citadel flip 96.3 to chr and go after Kiss and therefore get KOB back to the overall #1????

I agree Bobby. No direct competitor..plus..with the upcoming political season, KOB-am will be back. And if there's any huge event, disaster or political. Kob-am will be shooting back up.

The one with no competition is KKOB. AGM didn't give their format enough time. Had they done so, they would be battling KKOB mano-a-mano. Instead they are tumbling and now KKOB is stumbling. Why? Simple when there is no competition people relax.

KKOB has no flair, no excitement. At this point Clark and Villanucci mail it in on a regular basis. The fire is gone and the boredom of the hosts comes through the radio and has really started to affect the show. Perhaps it is the commercials... when something starts to build up all of a sudden it is time for 5 minutes of commercials, the news, traffic, weather... 12 minutes later the topic gone. Budding excitement gone, and you get 5 minutes of droning host until the next commercial block, traffic, and weather...

palalwanabe did hit one thing on the head in my opinion. Ahrens did stay a moderate on a predominate right wing station. He may not have been great, but he was different! Clark can't do Ahrens though he does fail miserably trying. So what station goes after Ahrens and maybe Jackson and gives it another run?

While KKOB might have some trouble spots, some I'm sure we can agree on - basing anything on one trend is simply stupid. This new trend has got to be one of the oddest ones I've seen in a long time...

Your right Ed. While KKSS is surging with well deserved great trends, it is crazy to spell the end of KKOB. And I have to disagree with comments about Larry being
the person making KKOB tops. While he certainly did contribute many years to a
great station, the station is the star. It does alot of things right. And the fact that it doesn't change on-air without carefull consideration and for a reason makes it's consistency the reason. If you were to research morning and afternoon numbers, I'm sure you'll find higher ratings nowthan before..when Larry and Chris Jackson manned the mic. KKOB will bounce back, because in Albuquerque, one thing you can count on with Arbitron is ratings wobble with diary placement.

Yes trends are not weighted so all trends really do is give you a possible direction.

KISS is #1 because of the under 24 crowd and KOB AM is Tops with the over 45 crowd.

Larry brought absolutely nada to KOB he was just the guy in the chair at the time it is spot on to say KOB AM is the star Not Larry as KAGM found out. Larry had just under two years and a Marketing Blitz unheard of for this town and he never got more than a 1 share a 1 share. Larry a nice guy who got AGM to pay him big dollars and he is still being paid by AGM to be on vacation for 3 years!

Competition....I first came to this town in 89 and KRST from like 90 to 99 was always #1 with a 10-11 share
WITHOUT competition and then came Big I in what 2000/2001 and BYE bye #1 for KRST.

96.3's Shock Talk has better #'s that KAGM every got

Marketing Blitz???!?!? ;D ;D ;D Some cheesy billboards is a marketing blitz? Like I said nobody tries or does anything different in this town. They all rely on the same sort of stupid promotions.

They Spet between tv ads and Billboards over $500,000 I would call that a blitz, if you remember for almost a year you could not drive anywhere and NOT see A Billboard tauting heres larry with a smiling Larry looking at ya.But thats in the past Its a fact Programin.sales & management all failed,

Re: Ed Schultz?

I don't have the 25-54 numbers, but could the 770 ratings be declining middays? Ed Schultz has said many times that Albuquerque is one of the markets where he's beating Hannity. Maybe 770 could consider Big Ed at one o'clock, and move Hannity to 1050 prior to Glenn Beck and displacing Dr. Laura?

Regarding Clark, Frisch, and Ahrens, I like all of them as morning hosts, but I'm curious as to why Citadel replaced Frisch with Clark in December, and given Ahren's popularity, why didn't they bring back Ahrens instead of Bob Clark? My guess: a non-compete from AGM?

Regarding Villanucci - If there is anyplace that afternoon talk is boring, it's *NOT* on 770, it's Randi Rhodes whining, yelling, and screeching on 1350. It's unpleasant to listen to Randi for more than 2 minutes. Someone like Peter B. Collins - who is actually LIVE nationally 4pm-7pm MT, would be a good replacement for Randi Rhodes on the Air America network. http://peterbcollins.com

Weakest daypart on Kob is 3p-7p.
Ahrens popular??? Once again a 1 share is all his " popularity" brought AGM
As it was told to me Ahrens asked Citadel for a Big raise He was told NO. He got an ofer from AGM he went back to citadel and said match it and I'll stay they said BYE BYE......That is the word I got so take it for what its worth.
Take it from me being a PD/OM /Morning guy is not a very good long term position..WHY you are at the station at 5am and theGM wants ya there at 5pm 14 hour days toooooooo long.

Once again put ANYBODY in ANYSLOT at KOB and they will get #'s...remember Jackson FAILED in TX and FAILED at KAGM

You say that the weakest daypart on KOB is 3p-7p -
Well, how about the weakest daypart for progressive talk 1350?
Could it ALSO be afternoons? I think that Randi Rhodes has peaked nationally as many stations delay Randi to evenings.

As for other KKOB dayparts.....
Any ideas on Alan Colmes evenings 9pm-11pm instead of Michael Savage?

As for KTBL 1050....
How about Michael Medved live at 1pm instead of Dr. Laura?

Talk stations need to use the basic formula, national shows are filler. They should be the potato to the local shows meat. What does that mean???

local 6-9 or 7-10

National till noon

local show at Noon-1 very light hearted stuff...

local 3/4- 6

National-

If you want to be wild and crazy a late evening show might be kind of cool... I have an idea for a 10-midnight show that would be really cool if it took off...
