The KLSU Tapes

Greetings from Houston. Four years ago I stumbled upon some tapes at a Goodwill that were recordings of LSU's college radio station KLSU from 1984, 85 and 86. These aren't airckecks; someone just loaded a tape, hit record and let it roll till the end of the tape (they had auto-reverse), capturing music, news, weather and spots. Now I'm just wondering if anyone knows the origns of these tapes. The only thing I could find was an inscription:
Fizz,
I just put this tape on one day and left it on record. Knew you'd be interested
in some "new tunes." Hope you enjoy it.
Perce,
Stan B (I believe that's the signature)

This might have been some college students, or perhaps one of the DJs that worked there. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Wait a minute. It didnt become KLSU till 84? I remember KLSU playing the Dead Kennedys, The Cramps and the Red Hot chili peppers in the early 80s. Fresh Friuit For rotting vegetables was released in 1980. I believe the Cramps TV set was around the same time. and can I get a copy of those tapes?

WPRG (1979-1982)...Oh and that is an aircheck...putting a tape in and hitting record is an aircheck 8)

wondering if you could purchase or archive these somehow - we have had a recent surge in KLSU alumni activity. Photos, drop sheets, even shows being posted. I would send a PM - but this forum prevents newbies form doing so. Thanks

Thanks to Paul for letting us know.

Scott, I see that sdh is still around on the boards. I'll shoot him a PM; if it's a 1984 tape, *I* even might be on there -- a frightening thought 25 years later. :)

Paul,
Bet you don't remember, but you sat in on my first show, we were having a tornado watch, we tagged team coverage. 25 years ago for sure. I stayed till on air till early 88.
Scott

Which reminds me I lost a buttload of old airchecks, including some horrendous of my airchecks from the mid-70's---closed-circuit-to-the-dorms WLSU 660-AM from east stadium!

KLSU was a great station during those years and beyond. Introduced me to many new tunes and artists, aah free-form radio 8) I lived in West Monroe and had an antenna up and listened to it nearly everyday. I think I still have a cassette recording I made here of their power increase and switch to 91.1 (happened simultaneously if I remember correctly?)

Another recording I have somewhere is from Angola’s radio station where the announcer at the end of his shift was stating it was time to put that ol ball-and-chain back on and head back to the cellblock.

aah free-form radio

Thank you Button, that "free-form" LSU station was the result of plenty of hard work -- and the love of both radio and music -- from a lot of folks.

From the Mississippi board's discussion of Dan Fogelberg's passing I know you also listened to WZZQ out of Jackson. When you heard the 1984 version of 91.1, I think that WPRG/KLSU was still doing the college radio equivalent of "Tradio" ("Fred has a ticket to the "x" show in New Orleans, Sam needs a ride to "y" in Houston, Bob on Carlotta St. needs a roommate"). When I started it on WPRG in 1980 I insisted that it be named "Listener's Classified". Ever hear it, and did the name or concept ring a bell?

Yep, it was a straight-up lift from the early days of ZZQ. As was the Events Calendar -- which I note (God Bless the current KLSU kids) is still alive 29 years later on the "Tigger Line" (225-578-8447 / "LSU-TIGR"). You cannot imagine how hard I had to work to get early 80's "we can't do that" Ma Bell to assign that specific number to us and not our dear friends at the Athletic Department.

To be sure, there was a lot of Louisiana radio influence to what we were doing. I was freely cribbing from Wayne, Cap'n Hum, and all of the other great NOLA and BR jocks who impressed me when I moved here from MS in the late 70's.

We had us some fun, yeah. Glad you liked it.

I remember the Listener’s Classified and Tiger Line on KLSU but didn’t make the connection back to the WZZQ version. I recently thought of it when I had to take my father over to Jackson to the airport, heck back then I might have been able to find him a ride with some freaky cool folks!

Back during the mid-80’s era I did a program on the student station here (KNLU) called “Eclectricity” and got many good ideas for tunes to play from listening to KLSU. KNLU was more of a traditional AOR during that time period so that music stood out from the day to day tunes on the station.

And then there was the Doctor Death show, what ever happened to him? Graduate, get married, and have 2.5 kids?
