The Lake 106.5 Wth?

As I was flipping thru my presets, I was hearing some odd stuff on 106.5, not the usual fare of Jack and Diane, Eye of the Tiger, etc. Did they jump up a couple decades? Sorry if this was already discussed in another thread.

Good observation! The bulk appears to be 80s, with perhaps a few 90s an hour, and maybe the occasional early 2000s. They may be adjusting the music to help the demos. There are some adult hits stations that have been Top 5 in 18-34. KCBS is one of them. So maybe that means dropping (or limiting) the 70s.

I heard some kind of hip hop. Then the next one was heavy metal. Holy cow. I never heard anything like that before on The Lake.

All of the songs are typical of Variety Hits stations. Nothing new has been added or adjusted from WHLK's playlist.

Your post was made at 9:21pm. Jack & Diane played ten minutes later.

Still playing Jack & Diane, but added Kelly Clarkson from 2004.
Since U Been Gone averages one spin every other week. Not new, but someone just happened to notice it.

Return of The Mac, GNR and Evanescence sound strange on this station. But times have changed.

"Sweet Child of Mine" was either the second or third song played after the launch of the Lake in 2011. The other two were played to oblivion back in the day and thus meet the criteria for adult hits.

You misunderstood my post. These song combos seem a lil off to me. They just played TLC after Metallica and earlier today Sir Mix A Lot after Quiet Riot. Just my 2 centavos.

For shock value, it works....you noticed it. Lots probably are as well. Thats the "We Play Everything" mantra. Personally as a Music Director I would do the segues WAY differently, but thats just me

The format is called "variety hits." If it's too much, then you need to change the station and find something more linear. Because this is what they do. It's a mish-mash of everything. In my book its too sedate. I'd throw in some George Strait for texture.

It’s called RadioDisussions and I made my observation.FWIW I’d add some Big Pun or Pitbull. For shock value ofc.

Variety hits, by name alone, means hit after hit after hit. The only thing that hasn't changed much since Jack FM took off stateside is the domination of gold titles from the 80s, which makes me curious why that has never changed. (Even 106.5 in the late 1990s as Mix 106.5, a prototype of Jack, had a heavy reliance on 80s gold.)

It was Skiwest who noticed it. I don’t listen to them. I understand the concept behind these stations. If anything I learned about reading this forum about radio, is that it’s all about the ratings. Unless the ratings are not so stellar. Then it’s about doing well with their targeted sales demographic. If those two aren’t up to par, then they add value if they are part of a cluster. If all else fails, deny, deny, deny until the station changes format or is sold 😁

It's not really "We Play Everything." There's almost no country and almost no African-American women on these stations. The formula is very specific, at least for Jack-FM stations. I assume iHeart's home-made version The Lake 106.5 WHLK works the same way as Jack.

It's about 40% rock hits of the pre-MTV era. The songs that made Album Rock playlists before MTV came on the scene. Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, Heart, Eric Clapton.

It's also about 50% of MTV hits. All the artists who broke on MTV: Van Halen, U2, Brian Adams, REM, Pat Benatar, Duran Duran. This also includes the only two African-American artists who get significant airplay, Prince and Michael Jackson. They each have eight or more songs in rotation.

Then there's 5% of unusual songs that border on novelty records. This includes some select African-American artists. Can't Touch This, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, She's A Bad Mama Jama, She Blinded Me with Science, Funky Cold Medina. This helps sell the "We Play Everything" slogan.

The final 5% is Other. That may be a few post 2000 artists (Adele, Ed Sheeran and as you mentioned Kelly Clarkson). Or sometimes a late 1960s song, Beatles, Stones, CCR.

I just checked the 'Recently Played' against the iHeart Pop Drive and Rock Drive national Variety Hits feeds and it looks like The Lake is no longer utilizing the playlist for Pop Drive. That said, in the past hour and a half or so, the only song played on The Lake that's not part of the Pop Drive or Rock Drive standard playlists is Poker Face

And they all followed the iHeart national format stations (iHeart90s and Lost 80s respectively) song for song. Although The Lake and WKDD were separated by a few hours so they wouldn't overlap.
