THE LAST OVERNIGHT JOCK IS GONE

I don't usually turn on the radio in the wee hours, but woke up around 4AM to crank up the air conditioner and put on Cat Country. It seems Bob Maddox is now gone. I don't know how long it's been and can't say I'm surprised. I think I'm more surprised the station had an overnight jock for so long. Don't know if he was kept on as a weekender as when I tune in on the weekends I usually hear the same people and the weekend staff is gone from the website. Hopefully he's landed somewhere or will soon as he's a good jock and was with the station for years. Regardless of changes, the station always come out sounding good as ever, but every time there's a programming change there are little hatchet jobs.

Every overnight jock left is on borrowed time. Boston still has a few and they will be gone soon too. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I just feel bad for those jocks left who are in denial. The ones without plan B are in for some rough days ahead.

Bob Maddox has been off of overnights for a long time. He still does his Saturday night show on Cat Country (6 PM - midnight). Last summer, Cat Country was so committed to having a jock on overnights that they had Kevin Lawrence voicetrack some overnights.

Overnight radio used to rock though. In some cases the all-niter was better than some of the daytimers but just liked the hours. The all-niters had a chance to get closer to their audience. Sometimes even literally, but we won't talk about that.

I'm a night owl as it is. I've always been like this ever since I was a teenager. I frequently stay up until 4 or 5 in the morning. I've always tried to work 2nd shift when possible. Better yet.... make my own hours! So I definitely appreciate having all night jocks on the air. The more poeple awake to entertain me, the better! :)

Now THAT'S the-end-of-an-era.

Light a candle.

Live, local, all-night hosts made radio special...even to non-local listeners. People-from-all-over still talk about hearing Larry Glick on WBZ. They can repeat bits he did.

And how about those great rhyming spots Charlie Greer did for Dennison's Clothiers on WABC?

If we were still in an age where radio stations tried to be special there would be live people on the graveyard shift. I believe they do benefit the station's daytime listening but you could never prove it. Not to mention it was a great shift for future daytimers to get their feet wet, but then if radio tried to be special there would be future daytimers.
