The Latest 12+

Granted it is only the 12+, but there are some interesting things there. Lincon Financial locking down the number one and two spots as they float the idea of selling them off. Should look very attractive to any potential buyer. While country might not be a big sell in LA, just down the road they love it in SD!

Anybody else care to comment?

Yes it was another great book for Lincoln Financial. KIFM is the only #1 Smooth Jazz station in the U.S and KSON continues to stomp KUSS. If LF does sell, hopefully whoever buys them wouldn't mess with those stations. Cox, for example, might change some things. Cox stations are generally very slow on adding new music and have limited/no personality outside of jocks reading liner cards verbatim.

One Lincoln Financial station that is not doing well is KBZT. San Diego is the only market I can think of with more than one (full power) Alternative stations. These days it's hard enough for ALT to get good ratings when they are format exclusive, much less in a competitie situation.

STAR had a good book, Will SOPHIE take a chunk out of them or not?

MAGIC also did great, one of the highest rated Jammin' Oldies type stations in the country.

Can you remember the last time in a full book 102.1 FM KPRI beat out FM94/9 ??? I can't. (never until this book?)

Remember that KPRI improved their signal dramatically during this book.

My understanding is that the KPRI and KLQV upgrades were implemented simultaneously. So KPRI is still not moved and non-directional?

That makes sense; however I believe Compass was going to fire up an HD tranny and a few other things. I have a call into Bob and/or Jonathan.

Thanks David, as always, good eye for the engineering info

Thanks David and Chris about the info on KPRI's signal. A check at radio locator shows a CP for a 32kw tower on Mt Soledad which should really help their coverage. I still can't receive them in much of south Orange County while I can easily receive stations like KIFM 98.1 and KYXY 96.5. It's nice to know that KPRI is still independently owned.

KPRi used to be a good station when the played local music like KFOG in San Francisco and the 501 Blues now they sound like every other "commercial" station.

IMHO, KPRI's problem is that they play it too too safe. Way too library based without going deep into it, and very little excitement in the music or presentation. KFOG is much more progressive in plumbing their library for rarities, being interactive with their listeners, and still reserving enough spots in their rotation for currents. I see Sophie as being a big competitive threat to KPRI, even more so than to KBZT. That being said, San Diego AAA oriented listeners are very very lucky to have a AAA (KPRI), nouveaux AAA (Sophie), Modern Rocker (91X), Modern Rocker with some indie edge (KBZT), a Modern Hot AC (Star), and Jack that also throws in some eclectic songs now and again.

Most of the format holes seem to be filled quite nicely in SD, with lots of variety too (country for example with 2 full market FM competitors and an AM classic country). The obvious missing formats are standards and classical. You could say oldies too as KOOL 1040 does not cover the market well. It could be nice to see Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel off the bird on another, stronger AM signal.

I always got the impression KPRI (this latest incarnation, not the original) is run by really boring people. Based on ratings, it does appear that AAA radio is often a futile attempt to throw something out there and hope it sticks. Thank goodness I can pick up K-EARTH and hear some non-Muzak adult music.

By the way, I surveyed 100 people and could not find a single one who said they were an AAA listener, although one did confess to not listening as much as he should at AA meetings. Twenty said they were Type A personalities and 14 had AAA cards in their glove compartments.

Hey, I know a few A-holes, does that count? ;D

That's funny, Bob! ;D

Bob Hughes is not boring, but he does know how to run a radio station. Yes, I too would like it if they didn't play it quite as safe - play some Aimee Mann, dammit! - but as noted, they are the last independent in San Diego. And they do put on a good show. It'd be a shame to see that go away because of a spirit too adventurous.

But I sure do miss Kenny Weisberg.

amen on both accounts. I miss Music Without Boundaries. Thankfully, the Loft on XM channel 50 comes close.
