The latest defections at Cumulus in Indianapolis

It's quickly becoming common knowledge in the market that Tim Burns, LSM, Director of Recruiting, and a "Charlie Morgan inner circle lifer" has resigned. I believe he had 15 years in there.

What's next? Any other "rumblings?"

Tim Burns is a little surprising.

Tim is very talented and will wind up somewhere.

To anyone who thinks that Clear Channel is bad, try working for Cumulus. I did... after three days I quit because it was already driving me crazy. They really do have corporate mandated playlists and other such crap going on. At least with CC we had some control over our stations... with Cumulus, you have none because everything (and I do mean everything) is decided by the suits in Atlanta.

From what I was told, they blew up a very successful oldies station for their current "jack" variety.

I listened to their FM talker about a month or so back, and I wasn't impressed.

I shake my head about FMS. They've been #1 for years. At least cut that station some programming slack.

wander...do some research before you post. Cumulus didn't blow up the Oldies station, it was Susquehanna several years ago.

WFMS is huge and just because YOU don't like it doesn't change that.

WWFT better get something local or it'll be back to Jesus music soon.

Elephant, you're correct with your first point. Susquehanna shot its own foot off when it dropped its successful oldies format for the lifeless Jack format.

The last point however when you say, "...or it'll be back to Jesus music soon." Do you have a problem with the higher ratings that contemporary Christian music brings just because it's "religious" music? Someone at Cumulus is letting their anti-Christian bigotry interfere with a good business decision.

For over 22 years Love 98 (WXIR) with its contemporary Christian music format was owned by 3 outstanding Jewish businessmen. Obviously the station was not an expression of their faith but simply a successful business. That's how Cumulus should've continued to look at 93.9 FM The Song.

You were told wrong.

A station that does not make money can't be called "successful."

Oldies may have been in the Top 5 for 12+, but all the listeners were 55+. That equals no revenue. No one in the "money" demos was listening.

It wasn't about ratings -- in fact, it's NEVER about ratings -- it's about revenue.

You are right about the first point. I was misinformed and apologize.

However, to clarify the second...I don't dislike WFMS. The comment was about corperate playlists. If a station is constantly #1, why not look to that PD for advice on programming sister stations instead of suits saying "Well, this song didn't test well in market X."

Frenchman....how do you jump to the conclusion that I have a problem with Religious music simply because I said, "They better get someone local or it will be back to Jesus music?"

I think YOU need to lighten up and stop reading things that AREN'T there.

Cumulus can do whatever they want with their stations. If they're against Christian music, that's their business.

N_D_Radio guy is correct that the WGLD format change was due to the station's audience trending older.

However, the fact was that the station was making money. It simply wasn't enough to satisfy local management. The obvious history of these properties is that local management relies on changing formats fairly often in search of the next "home run" ratings gain and revenue windfall. WGLD was making money outside the "money demos;" management just wanted more.

Hey, that's the American way, right?

I think blowing up the oldies station was the right thing to do. Heck, New York's big oldies station also was blown up for Jack, right around the same time. Has anyone seen an oldies station take hold since in either market?

The new talk is a joke. They got Hannity, but not much else to hang their hat on. What's with the guy in the afternoon? Financial advice? Get real.

I was at the Cumulus offices recently when they had an open house. Everything seemed normal to my eyes. Who knows, though.
