The latest MOViN to 'move on' is....

KMVN in LA, owned by Emmis but will be LMA'd to some Spanish broadcasters out of Mexico starting 4/15. What do you all think this means for the future of the format, given that this was the largest market MOViN? Will others follow suit?

Things sure haven't been treating MOViN well lately.

Ive said it before... Stick a fork in this format, its done....(BEATING A DEAD HORSE)

I suspect Movin 99.7 in San Francisco and Movin 104.9 in Anchorage will be the last two to go.. The one in Anchorage,, Seattle,, and Party 95.7 in Denver might actually last slightly longer. None of these sound like the other movin stations.

Remember KYMV in SLC is "All The Hits" now....KMVQ 99.7 is CHR...isn't Seattle doing fairly well?

I think 100.7 and 99.7 are just using the branding until it expires. It's sort of awkward.

I think your right... I think the Myrtle Beach Movin is just gonna get swallowed up by Jammin 99.9 in Wilmington,, they are both Jammin Oldies,,, not rhythmic AC.. The seattle and the Denver, and the Anchorage one are the only ones that are fairing well.. Im surprised the one in Anchorage is really Dancy, but it used different Jingles and imaging... Party in Denver is almost more of a classic hip Hop station,, I think the researched their market better, it sounds like what KQKS played back then, lots of 90s Gangsta Rap, with a touch of dance music.

The only company that seems to really be sticking with Rhythmic AC and believing in it is Clear Channel. They aren't using the "Movin" name and imaging, but they have quite a few rhythmic AC's (including some recent launches). They have 103.5 KTU New York, My 106.1 Philly, Party 93.1 Las Vegas, 95.7 Party Denver, 93.9 Kiss FM Raleigh, and just recently they launched two new rhythmic AC's in Florida (93.9 MIA Miami and Z100 in Ft. Myers).

So while the format as a whole isn't setting any records, Clear Channel must feel that it hits enough key demos (basically 30 something females) that it makes it worthy in certain markets for ad dollars in that key demo. And honestly, I still really like the format. I personally really wish it had taken off and done better than it has. I'm still really not sure why it hasn't. I wonder why Modern AC type music from the 80s and 90s can still be played and get ratings but the rhythmic hits from the same era can't. Is rhythmic product just really considered that much more "disposable" than rock? I've never really understood that one. Anyway, you know I'm a big dance and CHR fan, so rhythmic AC was right down my alley, and I hope it sticks around.

I was also sad to see Movin' 93.9 in L.A. go away too. I didn't like them at first with their 70s/jammin oldies type slant, but the change to an all 80's format in the last few months was great. Too bad they didn't debut with that mix of music from the start. I think it would have fared better. Granted, they weren't really what I would call Rhythmic AC in the end, but it was a fun 80's format (which is another format that I dearly love and hate to see gone from most stations now too).

Interesting point about rhythmic music being more "disposable" than rock music. Virtually all forms of Oldies Radio leans rock -- Classic Rock, Classic Hits, Adult Hits and, to some extent, even mainstream Oldies. Rhythmic Oldies and Urban Oldies stations are pretty much non existent nowadays. Motown used to rule Oldies Radio but not so much anymore. I think it was the backlash to disco's popularity in the late 70's that caused people to view rhythmic music as less serious, less worthy, or less artistic, so it fades in people's memories as they grow older, I guess. This, despite the fact that rhythmic music has dominated current-based hit music formats for several decades now. It's as if people want to dance only while they are young. Go figure.

That is one of the best statements ever written on this site. I think it is sadly true.

I don't think there was a backlash against disco anywhere else in the world - and rhythmic music (or at least the dance portion of rhythmic music) is much more popular and accepted. Coincidence?

Me also being a big CHR and Somewhat of a pure dance fan,,, I dont like the rhythmic ACs cause they take just enough numbers away from CHR-Rhythmic-Dance stations,,, yet they really dont play much Dance aside from KTU, which always used to be a Dance station anyway,, and unlike some, I think KTU may add more Current Dance back again,,, maybe not the obscure stuff, but we have alot of crossover Dance thats CHR and Rhythmic Friendly now...... I liked KTFM San Antonio, and its gone now,, it was what Rhythmic AC should sound like. Maybe Knoxville could get a Rhythmic AC and play stuff from the old 95,3 TNZ,,Later Power 95.3 when they added more Rock-POP,,, also WOKI when they were part time Dance on weekends during their final years, and the old Z-93,, and Star 93 played a good deal of Dance considering the conservative White Religious market that Knoxville was and still is.... At least you have a decent Rhythmic.. Hot 104.5,,, too bad their signal dont get out.. I really liked Wild 98.7 as well R.I.P... and WOKI was a pretty cool AAA before they went news talk on 100.3, and put WOKI on 98.7 with oldies... Anyway,,, sorry for hi jacking the thread,, just continue your Rhythmic AC talk...

I appreciate your kind words. I had not thought of your overseas angle. I think you are correct. The backlash was mostly, if not entirely, in the US. European, Latin American and Asian countries still love their dance music.

Take a look at this.
I live in Seattle and I believe they are doing pretty good.

CBS owns Movin' in San Francisco and they already shifted it to Top 40. Why not just use the AMP branding instead? They're already playing most of the music AMP plays!
