KYW 1060 is number 1, WPHT goes up .4 to a 1.8 in 19th place but still trails WWIQ. I think that CBS might make some drastic changes to 1210 because I think in CBS eyes, they should be the number 1 talk station, but instead, this upstart 106.9 FM is killing 1210 and I don't think that CBS will put up with this for much longer. I would not be shocked if CBS get out of the talk business or even sell the station and let 106.9 be the only true talk station in town, not counting 990 AM. That's just my opinion http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb007  1210 should not be happy to be at a 1.8.

Interesting book. Both IQ and PHT go up. WIP does very well and the fan goes up as well. I wonder if this is the final refugees from the AM dial? it does appear that the city can support 2 sports talkers but that the fan is a long way away from dethroning the king.

or even sell the station

While we might like that as listeners, and might believe that the public interest is best served with a better use of a 50 kW ND-1 signal, I don't see that happening.

Entercom could have done that years ago up in Buffalo with WWKB (50 kW) and WBEN (the "real" WBEN..., 5 kW). WWKB has been programmed with left-of-center talk for years and stinks in the ratings, but apparently Entercom would rather underutilize the license than sell it to a competitor who could program successfully against Entercom's other Buffalo area stations.

About the only way I would see it would be in a trade...with CBS picking up a signal in a market it under-serves, and then shedding 1210.

Much easier to read: http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb007

But the easy-to-read list is also wrong. It continues to not list WIP-FM, and instead lists WIP-AM twice. It's been this way for at least three monthlies - maybe more.

Philly seems to able to support a bunch of spoken word radio. KYW (all news) on top, then WIP-FM sports talk, then WHYY-FM (NPR) and WPEN-FM (sports talk the fanatic) are tied, then WWIQ (Rush/Beck/Hannity) and then WIP-AM (CBS Sports Radio). A lot of choices, a lot of competition. A great thing so much choice. I listen to all of these at various times, with the exception of WWIQ. Just not into Rush/Beck/Hannity.

shocked that you didn't mention WPHT. I guess the station is now irrelevant to people.

Sorry, I meant to include WPHT. I'll put on Smerconish to hear what he's discussing, sometimes its of interest other times not.

Funny how live and local isn't doing as well in Philly (WPHT vs WWIQ), but seems to be doing well both in Wilmington and Baltimore. WDEL and WBAL both do live and local and are competing well vs their respective cross town rivals (WILM and WCBM) who air Rush/Beck/Hannity. So maybe WPHT just needs more time or different local talk hosts.

Of course there's a lot more spoken word radio stations to choose from in Philly than in either Wilmington or Baltimore, so that might also make a difference.

Odd since it was alive and well on the old WWDB...

My theory on why live and local is doing well on WDEL and WBAL and not on WPHT: In Wilmington and Baltimore, WDEL and WBAL are the de facto radio news stations with news blocks in drive times and at noon. WPHT is all talk. WPHT is being squeezed on two sides: one by IQ, and one by its own sister station, KYW.
Here's another comparison that can be made to WPHT: CC's newly acquired WOR in NYC. In the latest book, WABC is ahead as usual, with WOR bringing in a similar 12+ rating to WPHT.

I'm really surprised WPEN 97.5 went up in the ratings, I really thought they weren't going to go up until they brought in some fresh new talent/shows. Bruno and Mayes is a funny lighter change of pace type sports show but I think Jon Marks and Sean Brace aren't good at all and they really don't have much going at night. Guess they're doing something right though with the boast in ratings.

Radiophiler good point about the lack of a news block on WPHT vs WDEL and WBAL.

Barthol, when I want Philly Sports talk, I personally prefer 97.5 WPEN over 94.1 WIP-FM. When I want sportstalk in general, not just Phillycentric sport/talk then listen to Dan Patrick from Fox Sports Radio (WWTX1290) and have also been catching Jim Rome on CBS Sports Radio on 610 WIP, sometimes Jay Mohr on Fox Sports Radio.

Having two franchise teams..Sixers and now Flyers will help this station be competitive. Not surprised at all by the increase now that football is over.

Interesting that the CBS Sports Talk on WIP-AM is tied with the contemporary Christian format on WBYO, a tiny FM signal in Sellersville that barely reaches beyond the Indian Valley/North Penn Valley area. They also have other small signals areound the region & are apparently buying the old WPAZ/Buzz 1370, Pottstown. Surprising they show up in the ratings vs. the stronger WBYN 107.5 signal.

' HI John,

Did you mean that the Christian group is buying the old WPAZ or the owner of WIP is buying WPAZ?

Thanks!

The owners of 88.9 WBYO are buying 1370 WPAZ according to another post here, and I'm assuming it would simulcast The Word FM as all their stations do. Just found it interesting that the once powerhouse WIP-AM, the MOR/personality leader in Philadelphia for decades, then the sports leader for 20 years, is suddenly tied with a 0.3 rating with a tiny FM that barely reaches maybe a 10 mile radius of Sellersville!

That is an interesting play on the part of WBYO. I like the move! They have a loyal audience and people will tune whether they are on the AM or FM dial. it also allows them to acquire a translator for the station and upgrade it. Could be they already have an application in or someone else does and they have an intent/agreement to acquire said translator.

LIFT FM should do same in Southern New Jersey. :)

I sampled Beck's show back in 2008 and unless you value going on anti-depressants, I just can't see how anyone could listen for any extended period of time. I stopped listening to Rush around 2009 when it seemed like he became a parody of himself, and Hannity, while entertaining at times really doesn't seem to know much about any one issue. He can spout talking points with the best of them.

The numbers do not lie though. IQ is a stunning success.

A station with a 2.5 rating, No. 16, in the January, post-Christmas, PPMs is a stunning success?

Do you know something about the numbers that the rest of us don't?

I guess compared to WPHT, it is more of a success. But it also competes with stations in the rest of the market ... and there are 15 that have better 6+ ratings than it does.
